| Many years ago, I had this issue, as well and had no idea where to start. I began simply watching what I ate, walking at night and doing some mild weight lifting (though being absolutely clueless about what I was actually shooting for).
Nevertheless, I saw dramatic gains and dropped the 80 lbs. I'd put on the few years prior in under a year. Sure, I hit a plateau and had to start thinking much more about my goals, working on routines, etc., but for a very long while long, rapid walks a healthy diet and minimal weight lifting worked for me and at least got me to the next phase.
