| | | 3lb Whey = 3lb body mass? Ok, here's my story. I've been on 3lb whey for a couple weeks and I took my initial weight to see if it actually works. When I was finished with the whey, I only gained about 2lb. What happened to the other 1 lb? I take the whey with water after every workout and don't take it during my days off from the gym. If I continue doing this, will I gain weight consistently? Also, squats and bench are the best exercises to gain muslce mass right?

| | | what about all the other food you ate? where did that go? nothing you eat goes directly to the body, some is used as energy.
if you want to gain weight you need to consume more calories than your body uses. |

Thanks: | How much will you gain depends on how many calories you eat overall.
If you think that if you consume 3 lb of whey in a few week that you will gain 3lb that's silly. You might or might not gain that much, the amount of whey you consume is only a very small piece of the puzzle. It depends more on the other types of food that you eat beside whey, because Whey isn't high in calories itself.
If you want to gain more weight, eat more. Whey isn't a miracle supplement, it's just a type of protein. I think you're not getting the whole picture. You don't need to rely so much on whey, have a chicken breast instead. |

| | | LOL...I'm sorry, but I forgot to mention that I do understand how the caloric intake thing works. I know that I have to consume more calories than I burn in order to successfully gain mass. However, what I really wanted to know was that if I do meet the caloric requirements, work out properly, and take whey after each workout, will I actually gain 3lb from the 3lb of whey AI consume throughout the weeks? I have been gaining 2lb from the 3lb whey and I'm just a little curious of how it works for other people. I have a very fast metabolism that makes weight gain almost impossible for me.

Thanks: | The body's production of muscle mass occurs independent of protein intake (given that you ingest the base amount necessary to sustain muscle production and regeneration). What that means is that eating extra protein is not going to "make more muscle" without a resistance component. Progressive resistance training, in and of itself is the only way to put on muscle. Increasing dietary protein only becomes necessary once you've moved past the initial adaptation stage (generally around 2 months, depending on the program and the individual).
That being said, even when you take in 3 lbs of protein, you're body is only going to store as mass the caloric excess, as the rest will be utilized in various metabolic processes. This means that in order to gain 3 lbs over the course of 2 weeks, you will need to ingest an excess 10500 calories over those two weeks, which equates to an extra 750 calories a day. And even then, weight will fluctuate 5 or 6 pounds due to water and waste weight.
And like others have mentioned, you're probably better off with a more easily absorbed and digested form of protein in the form of real meat or soy products, besides the fact that an extra chicken breast is generally both tastier and more filling than a shake.
As for your best bet to gain muscle mass from resistance training, you need to work the entire body. With a full body workout, appreciable gains can been seen throughout the body, while overemphasizing only a few muscle groups make lead to muscle imbalance and even injury. |

I guess 3lb into 2 lb is pretty good result. |
