yes im a beginner. I just turned 20. Im about 5'8 in hieght and 135lbs If I have to yes I can prolly buy weights. What weights should I buy? I want to get muscle tone where my pecks, abs, triceps, ect.... show nicely. any idea how long that would take? Rite now im only doing the basics at home. Push ups, situps, ect... I do 4 sets of 15 pushups and about 5 sets of 15 situps. With 15 seconds rest intervals.

Any reason why you can't get to a gym?

You need to be able to lift weights...bodyweight will only take you so far.

If you can stay motivated to do this, great.

Some people simply find that a gym environment, especially a gym like Golds (as opposed to generic fitness centers which may focus more on cardio machiens and aerobics than free weights) just keeps them more motivated...the atmosphere of a lotta people grunting and lifting heavy weights inspires them.

buying individual dumbells takes up a lot of space, they weigh a lot,a nd its expensive. you should look into something liek the stackable systems like Powerblocks, or I think Soloflex or Weider might have a knock off out now too.
that or get the adjustable dumbell bars so you can just get a stack of plates and use what you need (cheaper, less space taken up). Powerblocks ain't cheap either, but if you compare the cost to 12 different sizes of dumbbells..it evens out pretty damn quick.

Well for cost, as a beginner you don't need a lot. You will need dumbbells, a bench, weights - to what ever total weight you think you want, and a barbell is a must (You can use it for many workouts, well I have found good ways to).

I would recommend spending at least $100 on them, at least. I'm only 15, and can afford it, I'm sure you can.

My home gym is quite basic, but I can work a lot of muscles. I prefer my home gym compaired to the actual gym. I find I get a lot more done at home.
