Bikram Yoga

Thinking about adding Bikram Yoga a few times a week, plus my usually 4-5 gym sessions a week, do you think doing Bikram Yoga well help tone and lose the extra pounds I have been wanting to get rid of? I'm naturally extremely flexible and I live in AZ (already 100+ degrees) so I don't think I will get too scared of doing it again after I try it, so I think it would be a great thing to add in my workout. Thoughts?

just shooting from the hip, I am a big fan of yoga. Bikram, i think is a healing/treatment extension of the path? Isn't is focused toward a fix, in choosing mantras and such? If there is nothing wrong, then you are searching for a higher path, and greater realization.

I should do a search, but I know a lil about this stuff so I am not taking the time. hahahaha that is my qualifier for if I am totally off track.

concentrated stretch, and brething control will definately tone us up. I should do more myself.

FF

EDIT:
Oh hey, I just looked it up. That is Hatha yoga, and the Bikram add is the high temp environment. And I was right,,, Bikram is that dude that got hurt and then altered his yoga practice toward his own healing and then became world champ, and then helped all the old crips get better.

that hot steamy yoga looks great!! One point is this-- sweat/water weight lost in a steam (exterior temperature) does not really equal weight loss. The body will add that water right back into those cells as soon as it gets a chance. AND, remember- when you come out of here your dehydration level will be perceived as hunger, so be careful not to gorge on food in the quest for water replacement.

I WANNA GO TOO!

FF

Good post FF. I've done this yoga once-and only because I can't afford to go more regularly. I LOVED IT. I'm the most inflexible person on planet earth and even though I'm pretty non-functional in hot environments (see my last race post, haha) I felt like this was the best environment for yoga. The heat actually makes you feel way more limber and energized in the poses. I'd definitely add it to my more regular routine if I could.

I've had Bikram Yoga recommended to me before by friends and I've really wanted to try it, but there's nowhere closer than about 40 minutes away that offers it =( But there's a good chance I'll drag myself out there sometime to try it despite the distance. I hear a lot of good things about it.

Thanks everyone! We are planning to go in a few days, so I will for sure post my experience about it! I'm pretty excited, since all I hear is great things. It is more expensive then a gym (unlimited classes for $110! My gym is 32 a month), but I fork out the money for a personal trainer, so might as well for this as well. There is no price on your health!!!

Personally, I love doing Yoga as a great compliment to my workout. I just attend the Yoga stretch class at 24 hour fitness so my experience is limited; however I've been attending 2 yoga classes weekly for the last 2-3 months. After yoga class, I usually feel a lot better; plus its 1 hr of extra stretching that is pretty boring to do alone.

I'd give yoga 2-3 tries with different instructors as each one have their own styles and flow. Good luck and write back, how your experience went.

Bikram Yoga is Aerobic + Toning and Strenghtening

Alicia, you may benefit from some of the weight-loss testimonials at BikramFinder.com (google it) - they are pretty inspiring. You'll also find reviews of local studios at this social network for fans of hot yoga.

Well I finally got a chance to do it yesterday and LOVED it!!!! I'm going back tomorrow and am going to try it at least 4 times a week or more. The instructor said you will get results if you do it 3 days a week, but Im going to aim for more than that, because I'm crazy like that LOL. It was challenging, but the heat didn't get to me too much (but then again I live in Tucson where it gets to be 120), I did feel light headed a few times, which I was told was normal, but I did feel really good afterwards. I'm just a little sore today, but I am for sure going to stick with it and see if I see results. I'll post more about it in my journal tomorrow.

I am glad that you are loving yoga. Through my yoga practice, I've found out that yoga is not just a stretching excercise but a lifestyle change just like dieting.

Hope you appreciate one simple word but a fundamental basis of most yoga classes:

Bikram Yoga

Bikram Yoga is a series of 26 poses and 2 breathing exercises, suitable for all ages and levels of ability. It is done in a heated room to warm your muscles, prevent injury, allow a deeper workout and cleanse the body by flushing toxins.

“Never too late, never too old, never too bad, and never too sick to do this yoga and start from scratch again”.
