Another program you can check out is Susan Powter's "Trailer Park Yoga". Really works up a sweat. You can get it on her website susanpowteronline.com.

hey there,

susan powters thing looks very interesting but the dvd won't work outside the US.

has anyone seen the dvd? how does she get the cardio into yoga poses - just by going at an ashtanga pace or is she adding in non-yoga stuff?

anyone?

xx

Yoga in its pure form doesnt go along with cardio

its simply against the principles
Ive seen people lose as much as 22 pounds in a matter of two to three months, get cured of asthtma, bronchitis and other ailments
the original form of yoga is the most powerfull

the yogic postures are intended to improve organ function thus facilitating hormonal balance and overall harmony although it also has its effects on overall muscle tone.

for weight loss you should be looking for pranayama( yoga breathing exercises) with proper selection of yoga exercises
difficult to stick to it without a yoga trainer

doesnt building more muscle make u burn fat quicker? i know for a fact that yoga will build and especially tone muscles. so i would say doing it will help no matter what, and its way better than not doing anything

Yoga also encourages weight loss via stress reduction. Stress causes you to hang on to weight, especially in the belly.

If you are looking for a type of yoga that will help you lose weight, take a look at ASHTANGA yoga. It is a bit more fast-paced than the normal yoga and does in fact come from India, so if practiced correctly you get fitness and meditation all in one. One 90 minute class has been shown to burn around 900 calories (!!!!!). It did miracles for my mind and body. But you have to be strict about your practice.

There are several books on the subject, my favorite being "Ashtanga Yoga: The Practice Manual" by David Swenson. It includes explanations of all of the postures used in Ashtanga, as well as 15-minute, 30-minute, 45-minute, and 90-minute combinations of postures, in case you don't have an enormous amount of time to dedicate to practice.

I highly suggest find something on Pranayama as well. Breathing (and specifically the manner in which you breathe) is essential to your yoga practice. One book I can recommend on breathing is "The Hindu-Yogi Science of Breath" by Yogi Ramacharaka, originally published in the year 1904! It explains the importance of respiration and includes several breathing exercises. It's short (75 pages or so) and readily available. I got my copy (a brand-new reprint) on abebooks.com for $3.

Good luck with your practice!
