I've decided to start a journal to record my thoughts and such as I go through this process. I won't be calorie counting and that type of thing in this log, it'll more just be to talk about my progress, sans numbers.

First things first. I think I'm addicted.

Actually, scratch that, I know I am. I've never felt this way about being active before and it has been great. I actually love the feeling of being exhausted after a workout or training on the eliptical and just persevering even though I have felt like stopping for twenty minutes. I know it's going to get even better as my fitness changes.

A little history of myself is in order, I guess. I was born in 1984, in Ontario, Canada. When I was young, between 5-10, I was a pretty normal kid. I played T-Ball in a league and absolutely loved that. I lived in a 14 floor apartment building that had a decent amount of grounds (as well as a highschool with a track and such beside it) and there were lots of kids around my age in the building. It was great because after coming home from school, we'd all play outside together, playing anything from baseball to hide and seek to "British Bulldog". Lots of fun.

I moved when I was 11 and didn't continue playing baseball. I would still be active at recess, and made a friend across the street with whom I played driveway basketball with. As time went on, I became overall less active. My parents both played video games all my life and I did too. I still do. Anyway, once highschool came and Phys Ed was no longer a requirement, it was dropped from my schedule. No school sports, no nothing. The only activity I did was rollerblade everywhere, to get where I needed to go. I skateboarded a bit too. In highschool, I was never fat but I was always slightly overweight (or at least, carried extra fat on my frame.) Usually was around 165 at 5'8 or 5'9.

I moved across the country to be with a girl I met just before I was done highschool (Grade 13) and was just 4 courses shy of graduating. We got an apartment together in a small town of about 10 000 people. Both got minimum wage jobs on the opposite side of town from where we lived. With no vehicle, we'd walk a lot. Work was about 5km away. On days when she'd work, I'd walk her to work, walk home, walk to meet her at lunch and then walk home and finally walk to meet her after work and walk home with her. That in addition too being poor and eating less than I would usually eat meant I lost weight. I was also hit with Mono that summer and ended up at a really scrawny 145. Then Winter came. We got a car, I worked fast food (combined with being poor, this is a recipe for disaster), it got really cold and I simply stopped walking. In around 9 months, I gained 80 lbs. Yikes.

Flash foward a few years to now. I've flirted with getting in shape but never really committed because my only goal was 'get in shape' and that's just not a good motivator for me. I was building a lot of strength when I worked for the Railway but when I got laid off last December, I didn't do a whole lot of physical activity. However, with my daughter in the picture, I've got one powerful motivator. I've always realized that I think I'd like a career in the Canadian Forces. And the final one is that I want to run and bike and enjoy my body. I want to run a 5k. Then a Half Marathon, then a full Marathon. Eventually, (I'm planning for 4 years), I'd like to complete an Ironman. I don't care about a phenomenal time, I just want to complete it. I've got short legs so I doubt I'll ever be setting any records.

My stats right now are...

Age: 25
Height: 5'8 or 5'9.
Weight: 243 lbs. (Down 10 lbs in the three-ish weeks since I started going to the gym)

I'll be adding measurements as soon as I get around to it.

Okay, now with history out of the way...

Tuesday, November 17, 2009.
Had a great day. I took the daughter in her stroller for a walk (with a little jogging) in a nice ravine park just a couple minutes from our aparment. Walked approximately 5-6km at a leisurely paced. Enjoyed the unseasonably nice, warm weather and soaked in nature.

Also went to the gym with Sister-In-Law and her boyfriend. Went on the Eliptical for 35 minutes (30 normal, 5 cool-down) at a resistance setting of 6 (Out of 20, I believe, but I'll double check next time.).

For that workout, I averaged 5.6 MPH, "traveled a distance" of just a tiny bit under 5k (however reliable that is) and with an average HR of 168 BPM. A few times, when my music was particularily intense, I found myself going way too fast and hanging out at about 195 BPM. When I hit cool-down, which is five minutes, I went from a HR of about 175 to one of 140ish. Not great but I'm sure that'll improve.

That was my day, and it was a good one.

My name is Storm and I am a 19 year old attending Kansas University. I weight roughly 160ish right now and I'm 6'0. I just recently got back into working out to be stronger and look better.

This is my own journal where I will now log my weight training daily (the days I workout).

I started working out in August of this year, this is a continuation of my old log I had.

My workout CURRENTLY: An upper/lower split 5 days a week. With 5 mile cardio put in on Mondays and Fridays. Arms 3 times a week, legs 2 times a week. Abs every Tuesday and Thursday. My workout will change every 2 months and the last day of that workout I will remax bench and squat to account for progress. I am currently doing a 5x5 on major lifts.

Goals: As of right now I am in the bulking phase of my workout. I've put on about 12-13 pounds since August. I will continue to bulk until around March, which is when I will start cutting

Short term goals (by year's end):

Bench: 250 +
Squat: 335
Hang Cleans: N/A - My wrist has been injured for about 2 months now, hopefully it will make a full recovery soon.

Journey from in shape to athletic

A little about me. I am 24 and am in the USAF. Just hit my one year in today. I have always been a competitive person and love playing sports.

I played football throughout highschool and played baseball from very little. I have tried to keep up with it with rec leagues and what not since then and it is a good way to have fun.

Now I have been out of structured pt for a couple months and have fallen out of really good running shape. I have put on a little weight, and keep telling myself i was going to do something about it.

Last week a bunch of us from our office decided to have a body fat % contest, to see who could lose the highest percentage of their bodyfat %(i hope that makes sense;-) We got measured today and being 5'10'' and 207 i got measured at 18.3% BF. Which all-in-all is better than I thought i would be at.

I plan on doing a program like Crossfit Football to both increase my aerobic capacity and build strength and muscle at the same time. My longer term goal is to try and play some club level rugby with the team in town here, and hopefully get under 10% BF down the road. Our competition officially ends Jan 31, so time to hit the ground running.

Tonight i have a flag football game, so I wont be trying to tire myself out before that. I will continue to update daily(except for the weekends most likely) and hopefully with some encouragement i can stick to it this time around.

Thanks for stopping by,
Kevin

Well since I'm sixty now and have finally gotten the respect I deserve for my sage wisdom and humility (yeah right LOL not here that's for sure) I felt it was time to share some thoughts on years of exercise and weight training.

1. Never stop or let up. I guess that applies to all things but working out has to be a priority in your life. Never go into a workout with the mind set that I'm just here today to get a little exercise. Sweat, work hard and lift.

2. Gains and losses can occur at any age. Set goals and work your tail off. Realize that this takes time but don't let anyone tell you "ah you should slow down at your age". Or I'm too old for that.

3. Experiment with new routines as often as possible. Do some research for motivation and keep trying something new to keep your body guessing.

4. Push your limits. If you run go further, better yet go uphill. Take up swimming or Mtn Biking. Get a spotter and lift heavy.

5. Be careful with your body. Injury can and probably will occur. Listen to your body when you need rest or recovery. I stopped playing B-Ball when injuries were mounting. Just find another sport.

6. Don't get into the rut some people do by going to the gym and running the tread mill for 60 mins then calling it a day. Have you ever seen any difference in those folks who are soo stuck and refuse to change or try something new?

7. The iron rules. Say it again louder THE IRON RULES. Nothing else will get you better results. Don't be a chicken because you can't lift heavy. Loose the ego and get down and bench or squat.

8. Body weight exercises are a must. Injury is less doing pushups then bench presses and you don't need equipment.

9. Core is the key. More than anything else I have found the greatest overall results and health gains from a killer core routine. Forget all those silly machines. Remember your core is from your thighs to your chest and around back. I have seen so many improvements when people realize that hips are important in back strength. I think Drs mis the boat on back problems a lot.

10. Eat clean and rest. Do regular outdoor work also like gardening.

11. Clear your mind. Stress is good motivation but handle it correctly.

12. Smile and have fun at the gym. Compliment someone on the quality of their effort or workout.

First, to introduce myself, I'm Pierce and for the last 5 years I've been coasting through life at a McDonalds store earning minimum wage and wasting way too much time on videogames, however I've always been going to the gym ever since I left school and got a job. I've also only been doing it halfhearted all that time I suppose...

A couple weeks ago my best friend did something life changing and got off his x-box and joined the air-force. When he came back for a weeks leave, he was looking excellent, and told me all about the experiences he has had (which sound amazing) and so long story short, I have now applied to join. However I have applied to join the hardest troops you can apply for (unlike my lazy friend) and after extensive reading and info gathering on the course I've joined I guess looking back I had no idea how hard it is going to be when they take me in.

Basically I'm signed up and when they call I heed, It could be a month or it could be three. However long it is I am going to use this thread to chronicle all my training and eating habits as a reason to push myself so that basically others (everyone else here :P ) can criticize my choices and help me make better ones. This is pretty much a diary for me, open to you. I don't mind if anyone reads it or if no one reads it, I guess the fact that its available for others to see is enough to make me happy.

I currently weigh 64kgs and am 5.75 feet tall, have great arms (incredibly toned and i can curl 16kgs all day so im happy), have a slight belly and a bit too much body fat preventing my 6pack from showing if you know what i mean. I can only hope to get stronger and faster and enjoy the rest of my civilian life while I have it. (this wont be so hard considering I quit my job and have all my time to myself)
