Hi guys,

I'm new to exercise and I've just bought a treadmill as I have trouble getting out and about.

I've been going on the treadmill daily for about 38 minutes at a speed of 3.5. I'm very serious about getting fit so I would like to ensure my weight loss and cardio workouts are effective as possible.

Is there an ideal time to eat before or after when walking on the treadmill? I read somewhere (can't remember where) that one shouldn't eat two hours before (or it may have been after) exercise. Is this true?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

When I do cardio (either running or indoor rowing), I almost always do it late in the afternoon before dinner. Generally I'm hungry for dinner after cardio, but normally I'm hungry for dinner even when I don't do cardio, and as far as I can tell, I don't eat more after cardio than I eat on days when I don't do cardio. Often though, I don't feel it necessary to eat dinner between cardio and going to bed. It's not that I feel full or like I wouldn't enjoy eating, but rather that I feel like I could be just as happy skipping the meal and resuming my normal diet with the next morning's breakfast. Also, I feel like I normally get enough nutrients from my breakfast and lunch and don't worry too much about being malnourished from skipping dinner. Skipping dinner (or just eating some nuts or something like that) doesn't seem to have any adverse effect on me. Just wondering though what others think. Is it important to eat after cardio, or, for the sake of weight loss and convenience, I feel like skipping dinner, is that healthy?

Hi

This may not be the right forum to post this, but i need help with something.

I have a Body Sculpture spin bike (bought from EBAY 2 years ago).
The wool/felt resistance pads have almost come to the end of their life, and i cant find replacements anywhere.
It will be silly if I have to scrap this bike just because i cant find replacement resistance pads !

Looking on the net, it seems that Body Sculpture exists but in Asia somewhere and i have tried sending emails requesting help on buying replacements but with no response.

The other option i have is to get another brands pads and somehow attach the wool/felt pad to my bikes pad attachment.

Has anyone either experienced the same issues as me, or has any ideas where i can buy these pads (particularly in Australia - i live in Sydney).

Thanks

I've decided that it would be good to have a long (REALLY LONG) term goal to strive towards. I understand that, in the current shape I'm in, competing in an Ironman (with the goal to just finish it), is something that would not be in the next year plan and probably not even in the three year plan.

Currently, my short term goal is both training towards doubling the Canadian Forces entrance fitness requirments and hopefully completing a 5k run in the Spring.

I'm pretty overweight at the moment and more importantly I'm quite out of shape. I've started with thirty-five minutes on the eliptical (treadmill and running bugs my legs/joints before it starts working out my cardiovascular system, I find, but I will switch to that once I get my weight down and my musculature more developed), followed by fifteen minutes swimming laps in the pool. I intend to add a bit of time on bike to this. I do this every second day but am planning to do it 6 days a week with 1 rest day.

Is this a bad way to get started? Any suggestions?

Should I do HIIT every second day (I read an eliptical HIIT workout that could work.)?

Thanks a ton.

Hey all (prepare yourselves for a read =] )

Ok, so basically, through the 2nd half this year's football season (Australian Rules), ive copped some soreness in my right knee. Went to the physio, blah blah, you've got onset patella tendonitis. Thinking back now, I did probably over do it at some stages, which has obviously caused the inflammation.

Now season ended in september, i took a few weeks off and went back to the physio. She has said to continue some light running to keep some strength, etc in my legs and do some leg curls to help with quad strength. As well as stretches.
Its now mid-november, and i've stepped up running a little bit (2-3, sometimes 4 p/week). Ive stopped leg curls and do light deadlifts instead on back days. I do get some soreness from the running, though nothing like it was.
Last night i got a call from my coach that pre-season starts tomorrow night. Now im not worried for the next month as training wont be too full on, but after new years we'll be getting into some hard sprinting training, etc. Especially worried about the hard surfaces we're training on, as the heat down here in Australia really drys out everything (grass ovals turn to concrete)

Basically, just want to know, a way(s) that i can effectively get fit and ready for football season, while trying to rid myself of tendonitis?

Any suggestions/help is greatly appreciated!

About a month ago I decided to make a fitness change in my life, and there's a lot of work to do. I've been exercising regularly only for about a month, and have been walking / interval training on the treadmill all month, but jogging at a regular pace on the treadmill is new to me, only starting, really, this week.

I've been jogging at a regular speed of between 4.5 to 5.2 mph, at a incline of between 0 and 4, for cardio every day this week (sometimes jumping to 6 or 8 mph for 30 seconds or a minute at a time), which I can do only for about 4 or 5 minutes at a time. Not because my heart / lungs can't keep up, not at all.

The problem is that I get terrific pain in my calves, both of them and I have to stop for 20 seconds or so before they can take any more. It's like they get completely exhausted before the rest of my body, including my quads.

One more thing: My calves are very muscular, from many years of walking (for my job).

Anybody have any input? It's very frustrating, and it's actually really killing my cardio treadmill routine.

Thank you

Hi this is abit of a personal matter but thought someone might know the answer. In may I had a vaginal prolapse repair (thats what happens when you have big babies) and a tension free tape put across my urethra to deal with stress incontinence (I said it was personal and embarrassing). i have made a full recovery and have gone back to the gym but i would like to start running again. the physio both pre and post op said running was unsuitable but the consultant didn,t say this although i didn,t ask her. My quality of life has improved so much since having the op i don,t want to undo the repair but used to really enjoy running. Most days i think the other forms of exercis ei am doing are enough but on others i really want to run. I do have a bicycle and could do that instead if i really can,t. Not having my next check up till january and would like an answer before then, any ideas. Thanks Joy

After giving all this some thought, I've decided to focus on cardio right now for weight loss. This is my most important goal for the time being. I don't care as much about defining my muscles at this time. I'm sure doing some light weight exercises though would help. I got really ritual with cycling a few months ago until I had to repair a broken derailleur. That took like 2 weeks at the LBS and then I didn't get back into cycling again. When I was riding it was honestly the best thing for me. I was eating healthy and riding almost every single day for at least an hour. I set goals and even wanted to participate in my first century months down the road. Sadly I didn't achieve any of these goals and am back where I started. So here's to making a change!

Currently:
20 yrs old
6'1 (maybe 6 ft)
230lbs (got down to 218 when I was cycling before)

Goals = I'd like to make a short-term goal of losing 30lbs. First I'd like to hit 215lbs and then make it down to 200lbs. Like I mentioned before, I'm most concerned with losing weight and improving my health. These are my plans for now so please let me know what you think.

Mon/Wed/Fri - Cycling (I usually ride at least 10 miles, most I've gone was 21 and that was a lot of uphill, killed me haha)
Sat or Sun - Running with a friend (probably not too much since I'm still getting in shape, but a start nonetheless)

In addition to this should I do light weight training with what I have at home? Simple things like push-ups, pull-ups, crunches? If I should, how many days a week should I do them and should they be done pre or post-cycling workout?

Another thing to mention is that I'm eating much, much, much healthier now. I've already got my grocery shopping list ready and I'll be picking up some things this week. I'll be following the basic regimen of 5-6 small meals throughout the day.

Also I used the formula on this website to calculate my rough BMR and I'm not sure if I should consider myself 'very light activity' or 'light' activity. Most days consist of me sitting at my computer typing school work or surfing the web, walking around the college campus between classes, and I also work (but that's mostly just walking around. I work at Sears as a salesman.) The rough BMR came out to

light = 3188 calories
very light = 2732

Which one do you think would fit me better?

Thanks so much for the advice. I tried to make this as specific as possible.

Edit: BTW for anyone who's cycling, I do have a cyclocomputer. Its a Cateye. What should I aim for on average speed?

what do you all feel about treadmill versus elyptical; and any thoughts on the Bowflex treadclimber which is supposed to be a combination type of thing.
I love to run outdoors, but in the winter here sometimes that isn't possible.would the elyptical or treadclimber not be enough like running and maybe cause us to go backwards on our running progress, say if we happen to be forced to rely on indoor workouts for awhile due to weather.
I don't think I can afford to buy both right now, but whatever I get I want to be of good quality.....any brand suggestions?
sorry my post is so long...

I was a BIG guy before I got fat so I am now over 350 lbs and in need for a machine for cardio. At the YMCA I love the eliptical machine but I know to get that quality of a machine will cost me more than my $2000.00 MAX.

What would you suggest for me to get good cardio and heavy duty enough for a 350 lb + guy.

I see spinning machines are less expensive than treadmills but the treadmill could be used by my 10 year old who also need a little cardio too.

Any suggestions?

The brisk air hiitin me in the face and the rocks that are kicked up behind me in my path are pure motivation. Ya feel that ? When I lace up my sneaks, its like turnin the ignition key on a supercharged muscle car !!! Use this as your motivation, pretend your the bad a** car that needs to be takin out for a ride. "After you hit the steel". Put on your gameface and squint your eyes and let the adrenaline take control.

The colder weather can be such an asset to your runs and cardio for you outdoor athletes. Let it take control ! Does anyone else feel this new season motivation ??? If your on a treadmill in a gym, put that badboy on incline and pretend your runnin in order to transform into your inner animal ! Let the adrenaline become your motivation !!!!!!!!!! If this dont work, step back and consider how bad you want it... 83
