    ankle gives way when walking

I am a 54 year old female who walks a lot, I wear proper, professionally fitted walking shoes, but every now and again my ankle gives way when I am walking. Yesterday this resulted in a fairly serious fall onto the bitumen, resulting in a black eye, bruised lip, and various other deep cuts to my face. My question is, is there anything I can use to prevent my ankle from doing this again? I had thought of hiking boots, but most of them are very heavy and cumbersome. Would an elastic ankle support help?

We'll you need to see a doctor and get an x-ray. you might have an injury causing the problem. Some rest will be good for it. and yes it needs compressing, a good bandage or sports support.
If it has swelled or bruised at all keep compressed, and when ever you get the chance to sit down ice it for 10mins every hour and try to keep it elevated.

How long has this been happening? I would get it checked out myself, to rule out an injury that could be getting worse!

Does the ankle roll one way or the other, or simply not hold you up? Where in the gait (picking up the foot, putting down the foot, rocking forward on the foot...)

    ankle rolling

Hi,and thanks for your replies. This has actually been happening a bit, maybe once a month, and the ankle seems to roll to the left, and it is my left ankle that does it, I am not really sure where my foot is placed at the time, but it could be when it is forward. I had not even thought of getting it checked out, but itis probably wiser - certainly don't want to end up like this again! In the meantime, will buy a suppor bandage. Thanks.

First and foremost, rule out injury, or anything medical.

If that isn't the issue, you might consider a different type of shoes (walking shoes tend to be a bit softer on the sides and may not support the ankles quite as much).

My right ankle is weak and can roll out to the side easily if I'm not careful. I wear cross training style shoes b/c they tend to have good ankle support. Some more than others. Just yesterday I bought a new pair of New Balance. I tried on some Reebock, and some Adidas also. The New Balance didn't allow my ankle to roll out w/out actual effort, whereas the other ones did.

So, if it isn't medical, maybe check into some shoes with better ankle support.

Thumbs up Bought a support bandage

Thanks again. I wear Reeboks, and knowing the weakness in my ankle, I used to like wearing cross trainers, for the very reason you state. However, I bought a support ankle bandage today - top of the range, it has bone strips in it, and is surprisingly comfortable, and I have also booked in for an xray. Although I feel that it is mainly a weakness. However, best to get it all checked out, and then concentrate on a shoe change. Thanks to you all for your replies, I really appreciate it, and look forward to learning more from other members down the track!
