pain in the ball of the foot and toes when cycling

I've been trail riding about 1,000 miles a year for the last 7 years, the last few months I've been experiencing pain in the ball of my feet and in my toenails after riding 7 to 8 miles. I'm riding between 12 to 30 miles each ride. I've purchased new shoes that were the next size up and it is still happening. What should I do?

I'm no doctor (but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night), but I have a Morton's Neuroma in my right foot. Do your symptoms sound like this:

Thank you for the link. The pain does spread from the ball of my feet out to the tips of the toes and it is in both feet. It stops hurting for a short time if I get off my bike and stand for a moment. I have never felt this any other time except when riding and when I get home and first take off my bike shoes to walk barefoot on hardwood floors to the shower. Once I'm in regular socks and shoes there is no sign of a problem.

It could also be metatarsalgia. Have you had your shoes fitted by a pro?

I run and I know that there are certain gait styles that have a huge effect on the types of running shoes I need. The guy at the local running store was able to watch me walk and tell me what sort of shoes I need. It made a HUGE difference in the way my feet feel (whenever my Morton's nueroma act up I put on my running shoes to eleviate the pain).

Perhaps you could talk to the guy at the local bike/running store about how your shoes should fit, especially since getting out of the shoes seems to be the cure.

I'm going to the local running shoe store for some metatarsal cushions to put in all my shoes and hope this will help me to keep riding. Thank you again for your reply and the helpful links.
