HIIT and Weights

Well, I am starting to cut now and I was wondering, should I use a full-body or split routine for lifting when doing HIIT? I know that Full Body will pretty much hit everything but split may help slightly more with keeping LBM.

Also, what set-rep schedule do you go by when cutting? I am going to alternate from 5 x 5 to 2-3 x 12, but I was wondering if there was anything better.

HIITX2 weekly, FBWX3 weekly and you should be set. I really like and think it's important to integrate all rep ranges when cutting. So, your 5X5 is good as well as a day of 2-3X12. You might also look at doing 1 movement near maximal lifting intensity and follow it up with a 3-4 movements with a bit higher rep ranges.

Also, I feel the need to ask this.

I know I will generally maintain most (if not all) of my strength by lifting during my cutting season, but I wasnt sure if I could potentially gain strength by lifting using the 5x5.

It hit me recently that my level of strength for my upperbody is not where I want it to be, but I cannot stop cutting because it is also my aerobic and anaerobic training for tennis. So I was curious if I might see minimal gains in strength from lifting during my cutting session.

I gained quite a bit of strength while cutting. So you should too. It's been a month, have you gained strength?

Eh, I can sense a gain of strength but not much. Then again, I haven't really been concentrating on that actually. All I have cared about is tennis (since I'm my teams captain/co-cap and all). Tomorrow though I am going to start focusing more. Actually I haven't done HIIT in a while too. Damn laziness...

Just so long as you don't HIIT on your lifting days then you should be right.

why no hiit on lifting days? How about regular endurance training for lifting days?

because weights and HIIT both use EPOC to burn fat so doing both on the same day would be pointless, also he wants to gain strength, by doing both on the same day that would not be likely to happen.

I've been cutting for 10 weeks, and I do full body 3 times a week, with 20-30 minute steady state runs afterwards. 2 other days I do HIIT, and then 1 other day I go and run for an hour, and shoot for 7-8 miles. The last day I take off. I've gained strength in almost every lift with this routine, and have lost 26 pounds of fat so far. It's a hefty week of work, but it gets it done and doesn't tax me too much.

I have a quick question on the best times/day to combining HIIT and weight lifting. Due to time constraints and school, I can never really have a specific schedule for doing HIIT and weight lifting each week.

But going off bodybuilding.com's HIIT site, it suggests to do weight lifting in the morning and HIIT the next night. i'm a fan of doing HIIT in the morning to speed up my metabolism for that day.

is it ok to do HIIT in the morning and weight lifting at night and then HIIT the morning after that? i know giving your body rest is important and i was wondering if its ok to do HIIT the morning after lifting at night.

But what if you don't want to gain strength. Like...if you just wanted to lose the fat, could you lift on the same day as HIIT? Before or after?

Always do weights before cardio. Instead of doing HIIT after a tough lifting session, try lowering your rest times and possibly supersetting exercise in your workout. If done correctly, you can get your heart at the right pace to burn some fat. Just a suggestion....
