not in good enough shape for HIIT

for as long as i can remember when ive tried running (just normal running, medium pace for 10 minutes) i did feel my heart rate go up and breathing get heavy, but ive never felt sore at all from running...and i want to start doing HIIT but i dont feel like i will be able to go intensly enough to feel anything afterword because of my low cardio health, what i mean is i think ill be breathin too hard to continue wholeheartedly so i wont get the full benefit...any suggestions...?

Suggestions?

Yes, the reasons you stated why you couldn't are the exact reasons why you should.

When talking intensity, we're not talking in comparison to olympians. Its all relative.

You should just be giving 100% best effort on the sprints. If I go out for a HIIT session now, I'll blast the first 100m sprint like it wasn't even there, but I'll know all about it come the second one. I'll run the first one in somewhere around 11/12 seconds, I bet by the fifth time around its more like 18/19, but the key things is I'm trying just as hard.

Some of us just aren't meant to be great runners. You are genetically pre-disposed to having more Type I msucle fibers, or Type II muscle fibers. Type I is for endurance, like running, swimming, soccer and basketball...aerobic type exercise. Type II is more about explosive power, like weight training, football, baseball.

Now, depending on how you train, you can increase use of your 'weaker' fiber type...but a type II is not likely to ever become a champion marathon runner, and a type I is never going to win Mr. Olympia or a strongman competition.

and that's the beauty of HIIT. I can't run 10 solid minutes without feeling like hell, but I could do sets of sprints, and reap all the benefits...possibly more benefits...than running a slower pace, steadily for 10 mins.
