Question Spin Bike vs Elliptical for HIIT?

Hello all,

This is my maiden post and I'm new here. Not new however to cardio though. I'm switching over from the low intensity fat burning workouts to HIIT and hence my post.

I'd like to know which of the 2 aforementioned machines you prefer for your HIIT and why?

Also does anyone have a basic HIIT routine I could follow with respect to training on a spinner or an elliptical?

Thanks all, have a nice day wherever in the world you are!

Hi, i prefer the spin bike for HIIT since it's easier for you to start and stop the hard intervals. On the elliptical, I find that when my hard interval is ending, it takes a bit for me to slow down. If your new to hit, I suggest you do the following:

5 minute warm up

1 minute at an exertion level 4 ( meaning it should feel like a 4 out of 10. You should be able to easily hold a conversation. The speed will vary by the person - just go by how you feel)

30 Seconds at a level 7 (if you had to talk, you could but you would rather not). During this time you can either speed up or increase the resistance. Do whatever you want to push yourself to a level 7.

Repeat this for 5 - 6 times

5 minute cool down

The intervals could either be with speed or resistance. As you progress you can either shorten the rest period, increase the level of exertion during the interval or increase the duration of the intervals.

Good luck!

I too prefer the bike, but I'm biased since I've done so much riding in my life and love it. I have a hard time getting my heart rate up on the elliptical

Hiya people quick up date on this:

On Wed I did HIIT on the Spinner
On Thurs I did HIIT on the Elliptical

Protocol for HIIT:

5 min warm up

1min flat out
2min 65% MHR

1m flat out
2min 65% MHR

1min flat out
2min 65% MHR

5 min cool down

Total time = 19 mins

=================

Conclusion:

Changing the resistance on the elliptical takes longer than the spinner. The elliptical seems to be a higher impact exercise than the spinner thus holding max effort for longer is much harder.

Both were extremely challenging and hurt me - loved it!
