Weight Lifting and HIIT

I have heard that doing normal cardio and lifting weights on the same day is pointless because it negates the effects of the lifting. I was just wondering if I were to start a workout with a weight lifting period and moved on and finished with a HIIT workout, would this negate the lifting effects as well? I was planning on doing about an hour workout and a 20 to 25 minute HIIT workout, except on days were I work out my legs. Any advice would be great.
