Until about a year ago I was always the type of guy who just lifted weights, ate like crap and did no form of cardio or endurance training. Then I bought an elliptical machine mostly for heart health, but in the process started losing body fat. When the weight loss stalled I ended up joining this forum and did a total 180 on my diet and even improved my lifting routine. I've lost about 35 lbs and I'm sitting around 10% BF
Anyway, I was lifting this morning and heard a spot on the radio about an upcoming 5K race. I'm going to do it! I've been looking into race calendars on line and I feel pretty excited about it. I figure I'll start with 5K since I know I could run that right now and maybe expand from that. There's also an annual "climb the Carew Tower" in Cincinnati (45 floors) benefiting the American Lung Association.
I'll be around pumping you guys for info. First of all, I'll need some advice about shoes, especially since I have occasional knee pain.
I will run in a addition to my lifting and will post my training and progress here for all to see.
...Well, I went out this morning and felt really good. I only did about 2 miles because it was 22 degrees with a 4 degree windchill...the wind was killing my face. People were looking at me like I was crazy.
The only pain I felt was a tightening in my calves. Not the gastrocnemius, but about halfway between them and my ankles. Just a little muscular pain, nothing bad. I warmed up my knees with mountainclimbers and preemptively iced them when I got in.
yea good luck. you are cutting right now right? just curious, as i would find it hard to bulk and train for this at the same time.
I really don't plan on ever doing an actual bulk again. I plan to stay basically the size I am...maybe lose that last little bit of fat on my lower abs then maintain. If I ever decide to put on some more mass, it will be very slowly. I enjoy being lean.
MarkMyWords...I'd like to see you out there. Let me know if you do it.
Thanks Drex, I figure when I'm in MN I can cross country ski when there's too much snow to run
Thanks Sparrow. I think I'll use you as an information source if you don't mind! I'm new to running and have already gotten some good advice from my friends G8R80 and FF among others
FF, thanks for the shoes you recommended. I didn't end up getting the exact same model, but was informed they have a lot of similar qualities....at least now they won't call us "shoe buddies" LOL
