Exercise Pain

Ok I have been exercising for one week now, for cardio I am using the elliptical machine. With that being said I have one question, my knee's are killing me am I doing something wrong or is this normal? If this is normal would those knee wraps or braces help with minimizing the pain?

I know I am going to have some pain when I first began but this seems to be a little extream.

I am streching for about 10 to 15 minutes prior to starting each workout as well.

I notice when I use an elliptical, my knees hurt pretty bad as well, unless i am on a good gym quality unit like a precor or something. Something with the way they restric your natural movement. I am not sure how much cardio you are doing, but you may want to scale it back a little or incorporate other forms of cardio to see if this helps.

I'm not big on how restrictive the movements on eliptical machines are either, but I can't say I've ever noticed any pain on them unless I smack my knee on the front of it (if you've done it, then you know what I'm saying haha).

If you are noticing pain in you knee on any other movements, then I'd suggest seeing a doctor. Leg extensions and curls MAY also help. You could just have weak knees

yeah, see a doctor. and if something hurts, stop doing it. always remember pain is you're body telling you something is wrong.

If it's not start-up pain (pain from just starting a new plan or from doing too much too soon), I wonder if it has something to do with some other aspect of your routine and the pain only manifests on the elliptical. (I know that my knees tell me whenever I relax my form with squats.)

If you can use a machine that's in the vicinity of a mirror, watch yourself to see if you're doing anything weird with your range of motion. Sometimes people swivel, kick out, push off, etc without realizing it. If you can't see yourself in a mirror, get someone to watch you to see if they notice anything that might affect your knees or hips.

One last thing: some ellipticals can be configured to become virtual stairmasters, where you're doing a vertical climb instead of a forward-backward movement. This seems particularly true of the models that don't have moving arms but that have side rails instead. That movement--especially if you've coupled it with high resistance--might put more stress on your knees than you realize.

Good luck.

Yes! I did that in November. I was crouched down to collect my stuff and I got clipped hard by the machine to my left. Knocked me back a couple of feet. My knee was stiff enough to keep me out of the gym for a few days and I wore a brace for a couple of weeks. Really fascinating colors in the bruise that formed.
