Question Advice Please

Hi, I've just joined today in the hope of getting some sound advice on my current fitness training. I do a few RMP and BodyPump classes each week (3 or 4 of each) as well as some treadmill jogging/running but I'm becoming demotivated. I find that I often struggle to get my heart rate up to 80% even though I think I'm working hard.

I've been working out for a few years and in the beginning my heart rate would soar even looking at the treadmill. I know that I'm much fitter now and I'm happy about that but how do I get back into that high intensity zone.

I'm thinking of perhaps changing my fitness activities but not quite sure what to do. Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks, Sarah

When you say you can't hit your target heart rate, are you using (70 or 75 or 80) x (220-your age)? If so, that is an inherently inaccurate method as max heart rate varies greatly among people depending on genetics, age, and physical condition.

A much better way to train aerobically is to use a Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE). I use the Borg Scale because it roughly corresponds to estimated heart rates with a max of 20 which is approximately 10% of the max heart rate.

If your main concern is just hitting a higher heart rate, you should try some interval training. The HIIT forum on here would have some workouts for you.

Thanks for the response. I've just had a quick look at the BORG scale and think this may help. I'm off to the gym this morning and am going to give it a try. Thanks again!
