introduction and advice

Hello

My name is Randy. I'm a 43 year old man. New to the forum. Have some questions about fitness. I'm in pretty decent shape. I do weight training a 2-3 times a week and use an elliptical or treadmill 4-5 times a week. I'm trying to increase my endurance. My elliptical has interval programs that I really like and I have been trying to run on a treadmill but not making much progress in terms of duration and endurance. I am not training for a marathon or anything. Just general fitness. I'd like to lose weight as well. I'm 5'5 and 205lbs. I'm kind of thick and muscular but could stand to lose some fat for sure.

Question: Which is more beneficial? To maintain a HR of 145 for 30 minutes or do 3-minute intervals at 145, then recovery at 123.

I'll add that today, I did a cardio work out on the elliptical that maintained a HR of 80% of my recommended HR of 177 (142). I enjoyed the workout but I'm wondering if that is overly stressful to the heart. I was able to maintain a conversation for the whole time, letting my HR drop to 135 briefly, to rest. Thanks in advance for any input.

Randy

Actually this is kind of like interval training (or is?) and has been proven to yield better results.

Welcome to the board man, glad to hear we have another dedicated person with us.
