    Basmati rice vs. brown rice

I usually buy brown rice, but I couldn't find any today so I bought a kilo of basmati rice. How does basmati stack up against brown rice?

Brown rice is nutritionally superior to white rice.

Basmati is a particular kind of rice variety, but there is both brown basmati and white basmati. If you bought general basmati, it's most likely white rice, and not comparable to brown rice.

The last bag of rice my wife and I bought was Jasmine rice. We love sushi and sashimi and whenever we make a stir fry, we have to have our white rice with it. Once this bag is gone, we're moving over to the brown rice.

I got a B-A steamer for it too!

Got a 10 cup for the price of a 5.5 cup! All yo do is wash the rice and the steamer has different settings for different types of rice. Like the other infomercial, Set it and forget it!

The question is, do you cook it in a pot or in a steamer?

I've got a 10$ Chinese steamer that's nowhere near as fancy as your Japanese digital neuro fuzzy, but it doe the job well and has been for years. Btw, make sure you double the water when you make brown rice.

So besides the fiber in brown rice, what would make it better than basmati? I see that basmati has a GI around the same as brown rice. I actually get more fiber in my diet than I need so...

Some of the vitamins and minerals are found mostly in the bran of the rice. Rice bran is actually not that high in fiber compared to the fiber content of other grains.

As far as rice cookers go, one thing to watch out for is that brown rice can bubble up while cooking, which can be a hassle to clean if the bubbles overflow the rice cooker (the rice comes out fine, though).

I've used cheaper ones, they are all a huge hassle to clean up. My friend has a panasonic one (IIRC) and it burns the bottom 1/2 inch to the pot, regardless of what you do and the American ones suck. The Zojirushi one we have is absolutely amazing. It's so simple to clean and has all the settings you need. Yeah, when you break it down, it is a bit more than I could have paid for a different one, regardless of options. What matters is that it's easy to use and even easier to clean. Considering that I do both the cooking and the cleaning, it was well worth it. I've also go a Zojirushi Bento box, the male and female ones and I'm contemplating getting one of their bread makers in the future.
