Blue Monster

Alright, here's the deal... I have EXTREMELY clean nutrition (borerline freakish), but I have one vice: Monster Lo-Carb.

For those who don't know, they're energy drinks. 20 calories, 6g carbs, 6g sugar per can. For over two years, this is the only drink I've had other than water. It all started when I had a summer job that required me to wake up at 4 AM every morning. I was always so tired, but I discovered Monster Lo-Carb woke me right up. For whatever reason, I just LOVE the taste of these things. A while ago, I was drinking about one per day. I'm currently out of the country on an internship, so I haven't had one in two months...until I finally found one yesterday. I'm afraid I'll keep drinking them when I get back to the States.

My dad says these things are going to kill me - too many chemicals. My gut tells me he's right, but I like them so much! So here's my question: what exactly is the problem with Monster Lo-Carb? Like, what is the danger in drinking it? There's nothing wrong with the nutrition - my diet is almost spotless otherwise, so I can deal with 6g sugar every now and then.

Does anyone else have the same dilemma with an energy drink? It would be nice to know I'm not alone in the world...

The first problem is getting a very high concentration of caffiene and then suddenly crashing and burning later, just to repeat the process over again (when you feel bum) just to potentially take more than it previously did.

When one can manipulate calories (and nutrition) with proper exercise (and rest) to obtain the energy one seeks.

This (like so-called fat burners) just tends to hide a problem that needs fixed IMO: Education within diet and fitness and using it to ones personal advantage to combat fatigue.

I am not denying the effects of caffiene (it is a well-known stimulant, and very MILD diuretic); however, I just take the position that its more important to look to diet and exercise for the source of energy--then the false energy an "energy drink" provides.

Throw it in the trash.....

Best wishes,

Chillen
