| | | Do Potatoes count as heavy carbs Like the title do Potatoes count as heavy carbs like pasta, bread, and what not? I've been eating a clean diet with mainly high protein light carb like chicken and veggies, lean beef, eggs (mostly egg whites), dairy (milk low fat or soy cheese and yogurt), whey protein powder, natural peanut butter, nuts, sometimes dark and only dark chocolate, and on days I practice Hung Gar or Yoga I eat healthy whole grains like whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, oatmeal, or whole grain cereal before practice. I take in 2200 calories a day and weight train at least two times a week. I'm trying to lose fat of my stomach and know that eating heavy carbs is not such a good idea if your trying to do so. So does anyone know? |

| | | I'm not sure what you mean by "heavy carbs" but potatoes have a high GI. I prefer sweet potatoes ....pasta by the way, even regular pasta has a pretty low GI. I eat the whole grain though for the fiber |

| | | Carbs aren't inherently bad, but if you only eat 2200 cals/day pastas, breads, rice, potatoes etc are calorie dense and may not fit into your caloric profile |

| | | according to calorieking, a large baked potato 3"-4" (10.5oz) is ~ 278 calories
whereas a large sweet potato (6oz) is 162 calories.
as far as GI I couldn't tell you. But when I trained a long time ago, part of my lunch was a baked potato, like those red ones or a sweet potato. I lost a lot of weight after having a baby and potatoes where a regular part of hubby's and I's diet. I wouldn't have it for dinner tho... (though I have been having it :P but that's why I'm here!) |

| | | From a high-protein/low-carb approach potatoes are in the same group with pasta, rice, bread and so the answer to your question is yes. A diet high in potatoes may be linked with diabetes but I don't know what kind of potatoes (I would guess its the type that makes fries). | | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Rate This Thread | Linear Mode | |
