Protein Processing Rate?

here's the scenario-

6-7 hour event. Average heart rate of 130-150. Trying to save lean muscle from being destroyed in the final two hours. I found a nice fruity liquid called:

New-Whey, liquid protein, 42g, 0 sugar, 0 fat, with Myovol Complex

If i drink this one hour into a 3 hour bike race, will it help me with the 1/2 marathon that follows?

or would a peanut butter and jelly sandwich be better?

or is my body even going to be able to process this at that elevated of a heart rate?

p.s. for the wholefood naturalists LIKE ME, this is a one time affair, not a routine.

FF

Well my gut feeling (so to speak ) is that the pb&j is going to serve you better. Getting 42g of pure protein in one lump is going to make it very hard to process while working hard. The mixture of nutrients of the sandwich will be easier on your system and shoudln't sit like a ton of bricks in your stomach. I would recommend eating it a half sandwich an hour into it, another half the second hour with some sports drink and water in the middle. TRAIN with it though (as you've been doing) don't try something new that day

...and as far as heart rate. As long as you're not going above 85% of your VO2 max you will be fine in digestion and 130-150 probably isn't at that point. Its when you cross THAT line that you will have some digestive issues

plus, on race day, carb intake is gonna be more important since that's your primary source of energy.
this is why gatorade is actually a decent liquid for endurance athletes.
