Smile Taking Protein shakes and not working out useless?

I currently workout but i take weight gainer before and after my workouts and i workout mid day. If i was to start taking protein shakes as i woke up and before i went to sleep would this benefit me in anyway? Or would it just be a loss of protein and money?(whey protein/big cans at walmart

If you're already taking 2 weight gainer shakes, then food would be the bettter option. However if you arent getting enough protein with food, then protein supplements would be beneficial. They are not magic, they are 20-30g of protein; nothing more, nothing less.

It wouldn't be a waste if you need more protein in your diet. While it is true that protein before and especially after a workout is important, it is also important to have a diet high in protein. So, if your weight gainer shakes before and after your workout do not bring up your protein intake high enough, a protein shake in the morning or night would benefit you.

However, if those two weight gainer shakes and the food you eat during the day do not add up to enough protein, there may be something wrong with your diet.

I'm with the others, stick to real food most of the day and save the protein powder for after your workouts.

There are a couple of good reasons. First, it's expensive and if you're trying to add calories, it's not the cheapest way to do it. Second, it is highly processed and if you're taking a gainer supplement, it's probably high in processed carbs. This can be good for after workout, but too much isn't the best idea. Moderation is a good idea. Try to get as many of your nutrients from real food as possible. I know from experience, I've made myself sick by consuming too much processed supplement food.

Agreed with spicypumpkin, the supps are the weakest link. Get as much whole food in as you can.

One's body has protein needs whether one weight trains or not. Its my opinion, its better to obtain protein from normal food consumption, but if this isnt possible for some lifestyle reason, then taking a type of whey protein powder can be beneficial to this individual.

Again, the body has basic and fundelmental need for Protein, Fats, and Carbs (Macronutrients), and a need for vitamins and minerals (micronutrients), whether you are fitness training or not. These are essential for common health and nutrition.

IMO, its a complete misunderstanding of the "total picture" to confuse protein as the only source to assist with rebuilding and repairing muscle tissue, as this is NOT the case.

Nutrition plays a critical role on our health, not to leave out, our general well-being. Additionally, one's physical condition can be participating partner in health and well-being.


What are your workouts? What do you do.

What is your entire diet like?
