Is there anything I can add to my diet to improve my joint strenth?

I am a 5'10", 185lb, 29 year old male. I ran in high school and have been lifting since I graduated in 96. It seems like my joints are shot. I am afraid if I am walking my dog on the icy road an fall I'll be out of comision for months. My shoulders seem to always be messed up, I roll my ankels every few months, and one of my hips has also been bothering me. I was playing basketball with my students today (I teach PE) and somehow hurt my wrist. I am pretty active and am not really worried about this but hate being down for the count. I have adjusted my lifting by cutting weight and keeping a close eye on my form. Is there anything I can add to my diet to strenthen my joints.

i wouldnt listen to them if i were you,

Glucosomine is supposebly only beneficial for the knee joint,
However one of the best surgeons in the world that did me said dont bother wasting your money your better off saving up for a holiday

Best thing to do is exercise and strengthen the muscles and tendons around the joints yoru woried about

eg lateral rotation, abduction, medial rotation for the shoulder etc

You're an idiot. Without going into great detail on the benefits of flax oil and fish oil it is beyond stupid to say "Just excercise and it will get better". Ummm....yeah, you're body can't heal itself without all the proper tools.

Exactly it cant...if its arthritis.

If you think Flax or fish oil is really going to prevent twisting an ankle or dislocating a shoulder then your delusional.

i reallly pitty you

I think id take the advise on one of the best knee surgeons in the world, who has thousands of patients and decades of experience than someone as lowly as you.

I couldnt see you in the scientific world...any sort of critisizm and you lose the plot.

If you think that works for you, then spend your money away, im glad you think it works.

The best knee surgeon in the universe told me the same as Derwyddon.

See my point? If you're gonna critizise something, then go ahead, but please do it with more ammo than "the best person in the world told me this"

Like you say"Glucosomine is supposebly only beneficial for the knee joint,"
The first thing I ask myself is this "why"? and since you don't provide any why in your post, I pretty much won't believe it.

Can you be a bit more specific ...what do you mean by " messed up " exactly ?

Chronic dull pain ? Sharp pain ? Dislocations ? Swelling ?

If you focus on the word " strengthen " then I would think muscles rather than joints - in other words, use various forms of resistance training ( or physical therapy if needed ) to help you increase muscle strength and stabilize weak joints.

The shoulder pain isn't really chronic but it hurts when I do exercises such as bench press. It gets better for a while then goes back to bad.

The ankle rolling usualy occurs when I am playing basketball.

The hip hip pain is probubly more of a chronic pain that comes and goes. It usualy flares up when I am on my feet for long periods of time. The last time it was bothering me I was teaching a basketball unit in PE and was on my feet all day. I then went to the gym and did squats as part of my full body workout and it seems to bother me all night but was back to good the next day. I have noticed that it pops when I walk but it has done that all my life.

I'm not even going to respond further to Matt as it seems like he just likes to disagree with solid advice. Besides, Der and Karky got the point across.

Do you take ANY oil supplements fire?

Now I'm not talking to any "great surgeon" nor am I going to medical school like Der but I've had a few of the same problems you did with your body and flax oil has helped me to no end. I think that since you're a male that you should focus more on fish oil rather than flax oil (I won't go into the details unless you want me to). But what I recommend is buying some flax oil at your local store and start by taking 2 tablespoons a day along with some quality fish oil pills (a good brand that you can find at your local whole foods is spectrum). Try taking like 4 pills or so of those a day. This is just an estimate based on your height and weight. If you don't feel much of a difference after a week of this then up the intake of the fish oil pills. Let me know if you have any other questions about this.

Oh and I'm never taken glucosamine but from what I heard it's great stuff that people swear by. I've been meaning to get some myself but yadda yadda been slacking After a long time of terrible crippling pains (and I mean I literally couldn't walk) It took me a long time to finally get my butt to the store to get some oils too and when I finally did it was soooooo worth it.
