trying to work around the situation (weight loss)

Okay I've posted on here before when I was interested in dropping some pounds. Since then I had fallen off the wagon big time. Moved out of my parents, have my own place, going to college, etc. I've been reading a lot of great tips and things off these forums and I've realized that the problem I'm having (besides not excercising) is not over-eating, but not eating enough and when I do, its some pretty bad food (try convienience store nachos every night for a week straight). Recently I switched my gym membership and I've gotten up some motivation to lose the weight. I went grocery shopping with my roomate and we bought some plain cornflakes, skim milk, lean deli meats, whole grain bread, and some steaks based off things I've read off here.

My most recent diet has consisted of
Breakfest
Big bowl of cornflakes and lots of water

Lunch
Deli meat sandwich with mustard

Snack
Couple granola bars

Dinner
Steak or ribs, or if theres not any, a couple more sandwiches (haha)

I'm not quite sure what my caloric intake should be for weight loss (because I'm not sure of what the maintaining rate is either). I'm pretty sure though (based off what I've read on here) that because I'm a big guy that I'm not getting enough calories and my body is storing everything instead of using it to burn..

Is my observation right or is what I'm eating enough? If its not, what are some reccomendations of some other good foods to throw in there?

First of all, it's a good thing that you are making changes, so even if what you are eating could use some tweaking, it's still a lot better than convenience store nachos.

A few things to think about...

*I don't see any fruits or veggies, try to add those in. Maybe you could add some fruit in with your cereal (and try whole oatmeal for breakfast), eat some veggies at lunch with your sandwich, snack on fruit with some lowfat cottage cheese.

*granola bars can be deceiving when trying to lose weight, many of them are high in fat, calories, and sugar

*deli meats are also tricky b/c they can be high in sodium

But you have definitely made some better choices. Good going on the whole grain bread (try to make sure it doesn't contain high fructose corn syrup, and has a good fiber count), also using mustard instead of mayo is a good way to cut a lot of fat and calories out of a sandwich, so you're off to a good start.

Your probably right....in a way. If your caloric intake is below your RMR (resting metabolic rate) your body will think it is starving and begin storing fat (insulation for vital organs), and use unnecessary muscle for fuel.
The food your grubbing on.....isn't exactly the best, but at least it's not the worst. Lunch meat is a serious crappy source of protein. After it has been processed and chemically treated to withstand time....you don't have much good left in it......
cheap good protein:
-eggs
- tuna
-leanground meat
- chicken
-milk
cheap good carbs
-fruit
-frozen veggies
-grain/flax or oatmeal bread
-oatmeal
- sweet potatoes
cheap fat
-olive oil
-grape seed oil
- flax oil

put the combo together the right way.....check out this link
