| | why are they bad... and any good snacks??? why are these foods bad?
Yogurt (unless specifically low-sugar)
Cereal (90% of cereal is horrible for you)
Health bars
Nutri-grain bars
Protein bars
Slim fast
and are there any replacements/ gd ones available (UK)
i often used to eat cereal as part of my breakfast, and yoghurts @ other times of the day...
also, do you know of any snacks i can have (sweet) that are ok to eat and also taste reasonable/tasty?
thx |

| | | I think you have pretty much answered you own question on some of those and that is because they are high in sugar. Sugar free youghurt still tastes sweet and just make sure the protein bars you eat arent packed with sugar. Those two are still good. Im not sure what some of the others even are never heard of them. |

| | | Flavored yogurts are typically high in added sugar. Choose plain yogurt instead (add your own whole fruit if you want).
Most cereals are high in added sugar. Choose cereals made of whole grain with no (or very little) added sugar, such as plain oatmeal or plain shredded wheat.
Many of the bars are high in sugar and low in fiber and protein. So they may not be very healthy for general eating purposes. |

| | | Well nutri grain bars are made from cake mix.
Nuts are all good snacks. If you have a sweet tooth try some fruits, or dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is loaded with anti oxidants. |

| | | We could sit here and discuss all the bad stuff in each of those products. Then for each product that you replace it with, we could pull research on how that is bad for you.
No matter what you pick up, it's going to be bad in some way. The idea is to find something *you* think is good. Just read the labels, and pick up something else, and read that label. Pick one you think is good, then go with it. If it tastes good, buy it again. I went through about 5 different brands of cottage cheese before I found my favorite. My favorite is that fat free one with pineapples. I never heard of the company, but man is it good cottage cheese. |

| | These are my favorite protein bars in the UK Natural Balance Foods Shop
I had a hard time trying to find a somewhat decent protein bar when I moved here, these seem to do the trick for me.
I buy Yeovil organic plain yogurt and add blueberries, pretty tasty! |

| | | | here r some of the snacks i have:
Kashi Go Lean cereal with banana or raisins
dannon light & fit yogurt
light & lively fat free cottage cheese with blueberries
natural peanut butter with banana (that usually cures my sweet tooth)
not sure "how healthy" they are for me, but i think they are the better choices of what's on the shelf. |

not sure "how healthy" they are for me, but i think they are the better choices of what's on the shelf. | To find out how healthy they are, read the labels. Large amounts of added sugar are commonly found in cereal and yogurt; these make the cereal or yogurt less nutritionally desirable than types without added sugar.
Yogurt is easy -- choose plain.
For cereal, look for whole grain, and no or very low sugar relative to total carbohydrates. |

| | | Raisin Bran ftw! Look for 3g fiber minimum per serving on cereals and definitely go whole grain (Cheerios, Shredded Wheat, etc)
Lillian did you know that fat free cottage cheese usually has more calories then low fat? |

Lillian did you know that fat free cottage cheese usually has more calories then low fat? | hmmm...kashi go lean is high protein (13g) & high fiber (10g) and the sugar is (6g), 140 calories for 1 cup.
is shredded wheat or cheerios still better than this??
hmmmm...no i didn't. the ff cottage cheese that i have is 80 calories per 1/2 cup. i didn't think that was that bad.
to be honest i think most days i might be under the amount of calories i should have, which i know isn't good, but i just can't force myself to eat more. other days i can eat a lot. it all depends.

For cereal, look for whole grain, and no or very low sugar relative to total carbohydrates. | the dannon light & fit yogurt has 60 calories, says 0 added sugar, but then when you look on the back it says 7 g (maybe from strawberry/banana), no sugar showing on the ingredients section. it does have sucralose which i guess is that sugar substitute.
