| | | You guys ever watched the biggest loser? Do you think they lose weight too fast? Hey, I like to watch that show. It's crazy how quickly those people can cut down. It's not uncommon for one of them to lose 10 pounds (or more) per week consistently.
How could they do that? That would mean they would have burn be in over a 3500 calorie defecit PER DAY... obviously created through tons of exercise.
Think that is unhealthy?
What are your thoughts on that? |

| | | They are morbidly obese, thats why they can lose so much weight weekly
the fatter you are, the more you can lose in a short amount of time
once they get slimmer, the fat loss will slow down. |

Like there was a 190 pound guy that lost 8 pounds last week.... he's not even fat anymore. |

| | | I love that show! I can wait to find out who's getting voted off this week. (Since they didn't let us know last week...)
But yeah, I think it's healthy to lose a lot of weight if it needs to be lost. It's not like they're getting a huge deficit by not eating. I believe the deficit is from all of the exercise they do. They must exercise a lot...
This kind of reminds me of this really good discovery channel show I watched. I had a hard time actually visualizing how the body uses fat, and how that translates into weight loss. Well this show cleared it up for me. I can't remember what it was called, but it was one of a series of shows about the human body. Well, they had this swimmer who was about to swim across the English Channel. He had to put on 16 lbs of fat to make it through the 21 mile swim. It took him all day, but when he was done, he had lost 14 lbs of the fat.
I think it all just translated into the calories that his body had to burn. So yeah, if he could lose 14 lbs in a day (a very extreme day) then it's probably not so extreme to lose 10 lbs in a week. |

I would love to swim all day and lose 14 pounds of fat. Haha. Do you know if they did bodyfat tests for that at all? So much of that could have been water weight fluctuations. I can't imagine using 14 pounds of fat tissue in one single day! Very interesting. |

| | | Toward the end, many are not morbidly obese anymore...some are close to their goal weights and still pull those kinds of numbers. That's when I have a problem with it. |

| | | Its a show and geared toward results. They are probably exercising hours per day and eating under enough. However they all lose weight and that is the most important thing. |

| | | Not sure how the American version is shown but for me I think that it is an unrealistic represntaion of what it is like and what it takes to lose weight. It sends a bad message when contestants are "devastated" that they have lost only 8 pounds in a week. It is no surprise that many of the Australian contestants have put weight back on since exiting the show.
Plus the fact that the producers tend to edit the show for a dramatic focus rather than focussing on issues relating to health and weight loss. There is no time dedicated to discussing BMR, weights vs cardio etc.. |

| | | My brother works at NBC and in some weird way he knows people affiliated with that show. The basic routine is simple. They are generally given about 1,500 calories per day to eat and train a mixture of cardio & weight-training to the tune of about 2-3 hours per day. That's it.
As pointed-out, many of them are crazy obese and their bodies are prime for dumping the weight fast. Results do slow down as they come back towards a realistic weight.
One thing I hate about that show is that it sets a false presidence for how much a determined person should lose. I worked my ass off....exercised for hours, ate very little and only lost about 4 pounds in one month. My brother scoffed at my supposed efforts and suggested I was bull****ting my results. It rather hurt and made me feel lousy....BUT when my body-fat was tested, it showed that I had lost quite a bit of body-fat and in fact lost about 6.7 pounds of fat while gaining about 2.7 pounds of muscle.
Regardless, I work my butt off crazy-hard, keep the calories lean and I can't come near replicating the numbers those tubbies get on that show. It's just gotta be that they're incredibly obese AND when you cut carbs, you don't have as much glycogen and every gram of glycogen requires 3 grams of water....so much like being on Atkins, they're not so much losing fat as they are muscle/glycogen storage & water. Beyond that, I dunno.... |

| | The biggest loser is so bad. It gets worse every season i swear! its such a ****ing set up i mean the **** they say is so lame and you can totally tell they are like looking at a script on a t.v they lose a **** load of weight tho. I bet they are so week tho because they are trying to lose weight not gain any and i am sure that includes muscle. 50% of it is bitching and the rest is totally stupid **** like holding onto a rope until you cant any more and then its over. they don't give out any kind of info on how to do any real kind of exercise. |

| | | I don't like those programs, I don't think the diet and fitness advice given is sustainable for the vast majority of people and will just result in a lot of overweight people trying to change their lifestyles dramatically overnight without proper advice or supervision.
This approach inevitably leads to failure and cements the belief in many that they have no control of their weight
A more practical approach involving small, progressive changes over time is far more likely to succeed in the long term for the people viewing the shows. |

| | | I can't stand that show or any reality TV for that matter.
I think that chick that hosts the show needs to get on the treadmill.
the brunette trainer is pretty hot though. Jillian I believe is her name. | | | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Rate This Thread | Linear Mode | |
