Crunches and Pushups

Okay..

I am 6'3" and was 305lbs but now I am down to 289 due to trying to eat health and do some cardio as much as possible.

Most of my weight is in my middle section. I have a flat butt but big love handles and a belly. My arms are not fat and my legs (starting middle thighs down) are not very bad.

I wanted to know more about crunches/situps and pushups. Last night I tried to do some crunches but was only able to do about 20 until my stomach just hurt and I was unable to curl up any longer. For pushups I was able to do 10 (off my knees) before that was pretty hard.

Do any of you have tips on these procedures? Is that normal do do so few? Do I do them differently when starting out or just keep doing as many as I can? Should I focus on losing the fat weight first before adding this type of additional stuff to my lifestyle?

Thanks, I am new to the site but you all seem nice..

Just do them, and keep doing them. It doesn't really matter what the norm is...all that matters is you do them. The more you do it, the better you'll get. If the fat is in the way of executing proper technique, then I'd suggest you lose it. You're going do it by, as you already said, eating right as well as cardiovascular exercise.

That's nice and all, but body shots are more accurate to show us what progress needs to be done. Not that it's that much of a big deal, however. You can't spot reduce, which is what you'll learn by reading more on this site.

Which brings me to the best advice I can ever give you:

Read the site for any information. It's the best.

Hi Tropez,

I am sure as you do more exercises, you will get used to them and do more crunches & press ups than you are currently doing.

We all find it difficult when starting off any exercise irrespective of the weight.

But should I still do them even with a belly or wait until the belly is gone?

I would do crunches...unlike push ups the belly may not really get on the way.

You should however do a lot of cardio, aerobics etc to reduce the fat.

Do pushups with your feet off an elevated surface, if it's in the way. Cardio, diet, and weights should also be a priority.

weights seem hard for me to get into. how much do i use? am i using too much? what should i be doing with them? what parts of the body do i need to work?

I am pretty much stuck at home with a newborn most of the time so it has to be a routine I can do here. I have a weight set but never really learned how to use them properly or how often.

Hey, i weighed 305 senior year of highschool until i was like wow need a reality check and i was weaker then a lil baby. I was like this has gotta go down sometime so i started off like you crunches and push ups. I did 50 pushups every night for a month 5 sets of 10 pretty weak heh. and crunches i started out doin 4x25. After that month I was on the swim team so that was my cardio i was down to 275 and i could do 4X15 pushups every night and 4x50 crunches every night it was kind of rediculous how long crunches take to work your abs i slowly got off this routine :/ bad idea. My abs are no wear near as strong now but i did 32 pushups straight from when I could barley 15 in a row just keep at it.

I have been doing them before bed and whenever I get time. I pretty much just go until it hurts too much to do another one or my body gives out. Right now that is about 25 crunches and like 10 pushups (so don't talk weak, lol I am a peon). Since I can do so few is it okay with just doing them when I get time all in a row or do reps?

Updated pictures here.. Any advice on specific exercises I can do at home to focus on my midsection would be appreciated.

Cardio- running/walking, swimming, biking, etc.

As for the weights, you'll learn most of what you need by visiting the bodybuilding and weight training sections.

Dont go until muscle failure right off the bat! Thats a big mistake I would dedicate about 15-20 minutes right before bed and do sets seems like muscle failure doesnt give you gains anywhere just hurts, and you will also be doing alot more if you get the time for rest.

No problem. I have been doing them until the last one I do really has a pinch or slight pain but I don't 'push' it. Like this morning I was able to do 2 sets of 12 crunches until I felt it get to the point where I felt my stomach was at it's max. Then I did the same for pushups. I was only able to do 10 of those still but I am pushing up 289lbs each time.
