fitness programs

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey guys im new to the forum and i am just reasearching this question for a school assinment of mine and i was wondering if anyone here could help me out a little bit. Over the last 8 weeks i have been doing a fitness program i desinged myself and this is the last question on my assinment, and im just trying to figure out the best way to word and answer this-

Why is designing you own specific fitness program more likely to obtain your desiried results than choosing a "Ready made" program?

Also if anyone has any links to anywere that may help me answer this that would also be appreciated

thankyou anyone who helps out!
steve

Copy of program from assinment

The fitness program is desgined primarally on developing the core muscles.

Devise a fitness program to meet your needs
The Program

Warm up: 5-10minutes on elliptical trainer (cardiovascular).

Exercises sets reps rest
Front plank 3 Till faliure 3 minutes
side plank (right) 3 Till faliure 5 minutes
side plank (left) 3 Till faliure 5 minutes

For me performing this program I am using mostly my aerobic system as it is a type of isometric endurance activity. However this is only because I have done these exercises for a long period of time before this assignment. If I was a beginner these exercises would be a lot harder and I would not be holding them for anywhere near the amount of time I managed to do during the course of this assignment. If I was to write a program for a complete beginner I would not expect them to be able to hold front plank for more than 20 or 30 seconds straight away. These people are pushing a lot harder and using more fast twitch type fibres to get the job done in less time. These people are deriving their energy from a higher percentage of anaerobic sources than me.

Program Duration- 8 weeks

I am to do this program every monday and friday night

Also this is what i have for my answer so far exept i need to strech this out to about 1000 words this is why im asking for any ideas people have

:

Ready made programs provide a blue print that allow an individual to understand the areas he needs to cover more effectively. Since most people don’t have the required knowledge to design a fitness program for themselves from scratch, ready made programs are beneficial until you are able to grasp a deeper understanding of training theories and why you do what you do.

Once you are able to apply further knowledge that you learn though trial and error you can then personalise and tweak a program to uniquely fit you, at this point it is obviously becoming the most effective way to train.

So to put it simply, It’s a blend of the two. If you are not experienced and you go out and design something totally unique, it may not work as well as you like. If you follow generic ready made programs religiously, you may also stunt your progress. Unless your a qualified personal trainer or already have a very good understanding of the how the body responds to training, the best way to obtain the results you strive for is to mix these two techniques together to create most effective training programs for your body type and individual fitness goals.

I like that answer dude, well written.

I agree newbies should look or hire quailty coaches before designing there own programs but they should be conscious of how there body is reacting and assess there weaknesses and strengths.

I think one benefit of designing your own routine is finding out what works best for you. This will help you become more interested in your routine and your body. Once your interested, your hooked.

most have no clue when it comes to designing a routine. they base it off bodypart splits and just throw some exercises together. you ask them about volume, intensity and frequency and they go "huh???"

they'll also scream "it works for me" but on the internet that doesnt mean much

Here this come up witha bit more, however i really cant think of whot else to talk about

So to put it simply, for optimum results you need a blend of the two. If you are not experienced and you go out and design something totally unique, it may not work as well as you like. If you follow generic ready made programs religiously, you may also stunt your progress. Unless your a qualified personal trainer or already have a very good understanding of the how the body responds to training, the best way to obtain the results you strive for is to mix these two techniques together to create most effective training program for your body type and individual fitness goals.

But this is not the end, sometimes an individual may need to have a program designed specifically for them from the start to suit their individual circumstances. Imagine a sprinter who trains with weights on a consistent basis as part of his training program, he keeps tearing his hamstrings and he has been told by his physiotherapist that he has a large imbalance between the size of the quadriceps and his hamstring. He is told that is quadriceps have become to powerful and developed to compete with his hamstrings. In this case it may be more appropriate to have a program designed by a personal trainer. The trainer may design a customised program that is aimed at being slightly more taxing to the hamstring and less taxing to the quadriceps. This would in turn bring the hamstrings back to a state of equality with the quadriceps and allow the athlete to return to training.

So it this case it is obvious, the question of weather an indivdual needs a ready made program or a more custimised program from the start greatly depends on the current circumstances and goals of the individual.
