Question on doing Pushups as a beginner.

Hey Gang! I have a question on pushups. I have just recently started to do pushups and I found that I was actually able to do more than 1 or 2 by doing them on my knees rather than my toes. I think I may weight so much right now It's just too much for me to try and push up (289lbs).

Last night I was reading in Mens Health that if I cannot do regular pushups to do them on a step or bench as an incline if they are too hard.

What is the difference between doing them on my knees vs a step or bench? Do a work a different muscle or something doing them the way I am now? Should I look at changing or not worry about it?

I believe you may have misread the article, although I could be mistaken. I believe the article was saying if you want to make the pushups more difficult, then you do them on a step or a bench.

No the article is correct. The more of an incline you are on (hands higher than feet) the easier the push up is. Stand facing against a wall, push.. easy, basically you are shifting weight (center of gravity).

Doing them on your knees also removes the amount of weight you are pushing.

Try on your knees crank out 10-20, if it isn't even hard, try an incline and figure what works best. Basically you want to stay safe and force your body to work. As you train your muscles to the exercise they will be able to assist you more and more.

Hope that helps.

THX bro.

Right now I am capped at about 2 sets of 6 pushups on my knees until my arms want to give out.
