Distance vs Speed in burning Calories

Hello

I have been hearing conflicting reports about how many calories are burning doing walking/jogging, in regards to speed and distance.

To elaborate, the theory I am describing goes like this:
Jogging for X distance burns the same (or similar) amount of calories as walking for X distance.
The theory is based on the following notion;
- When jogging, you burn more calories per the same amount of time as walking, but because it's faster, you cover the same distance in a shorter time span.
- When walking, you burn less calories per the same amount of time as jogging, but because it's slower, you cover the same distance in a longer time span.
=> Based on that, when walking and jogging an identical distance, the amount of calories burn is the same or similar.

In addition I have heard that calorie burning is most efficient at the aerobic threshold of around 80% (in regards to longer span actives of around 1-2hours), which would contradict the previous theory.

I am wondering as to what extent either of these is true.

Cheers!

Calories burned is based on distance traveled, your weight and the exercise you are doing. Other factors can alter how many calories you burn such as adding in hills to a run or walk.

But to answer your question directly, you will burn the same amount of calories running 1 mile as you do walking 1 mile. Time has nothing to do with it aside from, as you said, 1 being longer than the other.

Now the source of the calories (energy) that you use will vary dependent on how hard your exercise is and how long you are going for it, which is where the theories on aerobic threshold and optimum heart rates come into play.

yeah. Running 10km quickly or slowly will burn about the same amount of calories (for the same person, ofcourse)

I don't think running 10km will expend the same amount energy as walking (I'm guessing running would expend more, but I'm not sure). Running and walking are pretty different movement patterns.

surely there must have been some research conducted on this sometime..

Energy expenditure of walking and running: Comparison with prediction equations

found that. I just read the abstract and according to it running burnes more calories, with the same distance travelled, than walking.
