From past experience, i like gels, when your not running and just tasting one then they're not so pleasant, but trust me, when your running low on energy, they are a savior! Also I really do advise that you use them in training prior to your race, otherwise your stomach will not be used to them, and you may find yourself with stomach cramps.....the last thing you want with a few miles to go! So, yes, they're definately worth a try but make sure you experiment with them beforehand! Hope that sheds some light
