Loss of pace/acceleration

I played some football (soccer) last night and noticed a distinct lack of pace and acceleration ... which is not good when playing football. So far most of my training has been on endurance. I don't think the fact that I can do 10k in under an hour is going to help with playing football where there is a constant stop-start/accelerate-decelerate action.

Anyone have any ideas, other than playing more frequently, on what I can do to help see gains in this area? If anything, I almost feel as though my current routine, despite probably being healthier and fitter than I have been in years, has helped much in this instance. Thanks.

You could start doing short sprints, working on your power and acceleration.`

Do some explosive lifting. Some olympic lifts are good.

Yep, I'll have to throw some sprinting and HIIT into my routine once I get from holiday. It was pretty shocking just how much pace I have lost. I guess my workouts have been working on developing slow-twitch fibres rather than fast-twitch i.e those responsible for developing speed and fast reactions.

Also, I might try and play football more often, because I was pretty awful last night
