Tapering

My post on "Gel" explains a race I'm getting ready for but for those of you who race significantly, what is your method of resting as the race approaches? The last time I carbed up a little just the week before (I eat pretty low carb naturally so carbing up doesn't take much) and did a few miles (2-3) every other day easy with nothing done the day before. As a former swimmer all my life we'd do full tapers 2 weeks before a big meet. The last week would be virtually nothing only a warm up/cool down type swim and practicing starts and finishes. Is this something that runners do?
