Going out for Wrestling this year. advice anyone?

I already talked to the coach about playing this year. He only has 12 guys going out for it. I weigh 178 pounds right now and the class I can enter in is either 171 (lose 7 pounds , pretty easy because I can lose a pound a week till signups) or weigh 190 (gain a bunch of fat and not enough food). There is no one else in my weight class and I will be starting Varsity automatically.

It sounds like alot of fun. My friend does wrestling after football and he says its makes you alot faster and quicker. (gotta take his advice; he runs a 4.5 40 yard dash).

There are open mats every Tuesday and Thursday and I might enter the Thursday one after football practice assuming are practice is shorter.

Plus, this gives me a reason to cut a bit and lost my little gut. I have always wanted a ripped look. And again; I really need some speed. (5.4 40 yard dash). And wrestling helps you get lower. We have access to the weight room everyday so I can still get stronger and faster for football.

Last year I said I was gonna try but I didn't. I guess because I was lazy or didn't wanna try something new. but now I kind of regret not trying. So I decided to try this year because if I do like wrestling; I can get another year of doing it.

Any advice from any wrestlers?

hope merciless finds this thread...

Lose the 7.

Fun? hehe. depends on your definition of 'fun' Let me put it this way- the way we train...Our football team is so good that we are atually sponsored by Reebok. Our football players get a bunch of free things. Alot of football players have admited that they don't want to wrestle because they think it would be so hard. A few of my buddies that do fball were telling me I would have no prob in football since I'm a wrestler. It's crazy, but yes...it's pretty fun.

Definitley go to open mats whenever you can. You are going to be startign varsity so it's not going to be easy your first year. You need to get the techniques down because you prob already have good conditioning. You are going out infront of a bunch of people. You don't wanna get embarressed by sucking really badly. So practice as often as possible, get to open mats whenever you can. Get the rules down, find another wrestler thats around your weight that you can possibly wrestle with and he can show you some moves. Theres a ton of good ones you can learn. Also, a great book to check out that I have is "Winning Wrestling Moves" by Mysnyk, Davis, and Simpson. Gives you a bunch of moves, a lot of pictures showing you how to do them as well.

You'll have a blast man, trust me. I know you love competition and this is the most competitive sport out there. 1 on 1 battle, a true warrior sport.

Just remember-either out muscle your opponent, or out technique him. Hopefully you will have the ability to do both. GL!!

I knew you would find this thread if wrestling were in the title.

I'm definetely going try to compete in open mats on Thursday if I can. My father was an All-American Wrestler all through college and he played D1 so hes going to show me some moves. My father has been begging me to do wrestling since middle school and looks like this year hes getting his wish.

He showed me a few moves. Single/double leg takedown and he showed me how to find with a "cradle". I definetely need to get as much experience as I can before the season.

And I alreay cutted junk food out of my diet. Haven't eaten junk for a few days now and gonna keep it that way.

Oh my lawd. Definitley get as much information as you can from your dad. That's awesome.

Lift all types, not just for numbers. Work on everything (plyos, speed, explosive, power, etc.). Work on endurance. 3 rounds of 2 minutes doesn't seem like long....trust me...its the longest 6 minutes of your life. Not really 3 rounds, theres no break in between rounds, just you rush to reposition in the middle.

You are gonna have fun man, just make sure you go to open mats and get some pre-season knowledge.

Thursday September 27 Open mats

Thanks.

Alright I just got home from Open mats today. There was only 4 players there. My father came with me to practice. He showed me all types of moves on the mat for the next hour. He showed me the basics like Wrist Control, Cradles, Pinning, how the point system works. To be honest there was so much information my father and the coach threw at me at once. They told me the only way to get better is with experience and practice.

Alright First match
Okay since this guy named "pence" was't there (he is around my weight the coach says) I had to go up against a kid who was 130 pounds. I told the coach "are you serious this boy is small" acting all ****y...but god was I wrong..

The start of the match we shake hands and then I do a straight shoot into him and double leg takedown him. I could have done a pin or something but I forgot. I don't even think it mattered. All of a sudden he got up real quick and like pinned me . I can't even describe it because it was so freaking fast. I had no idea of move he did. Next thing you know he is on top of me and I only have 1 arm free and I couldn't escape.

Second Match
Basically the same as the first once I started off with a takedown against a guy who was 150. But this time I was on has back trying to do a cradle or something to pin him but he ended up getting my arm and getting up. Next thing you know we are in a grapple and somehow that boy like made me trip and my face slammed straight into the mat, he rolled me over real quick and pinned me. somehow my arms were captured.

These matched are freaking quick!!! If you can't think of a move for one second there gonna get points on you.

After the match I weighed at 173 pounds. The closest weight class to me is 171 which is no problem. Or I could lose my gut and get down to 160 which also has no wreslers on our team.

It was a blast. I can't wait till Tuesday to wrestle this kid thats on my football team. I just need more exprience and practice.

wrestling

wow were in the same exact position lol. I weigh about 178 lbs, i did way 192 2 weeks ago when wrestling work outs started. I myself wrestled in 7th and 8th grade(im a senior in high school this year). But you definitly want to go down in weight!!! I am thinking about 160 or possibly 152. If i dont make weight ill most likely wrestle 171. but practice is everything!! skill+cardio=wins. Strength will only come into factor if your significantly stronger than your opponent. Otherwise just wrestle your ass off. For example my friend who wrestled last year at 171 could bench 315, hes ****ing hugeeee. but he said that he even played a couple of bigger guys in the 171 lb weight class. But just dont give up or expect to win this year. just try to break even with more wins than loses. some kids have been doing it for over 10 years. Good luck! btw where are you from? i just could be playing you this year haha
