| | Swimming What is Swimming?
Swimming is the movement by human bodies through the water, usually without assistance. Swimming is an activity and sport that can be both useful and recreational. Its primary uses are bathing, relaxing, travel, escape, and sport. An individual's ability to swim can be judged by speed or stamina.
Swimming is a great form of exercise. The human body is supported by the water and less stress and presure is placed on joints and bones. Swimming is frequently used as an exercise for those with a disability or trying to recover from an injury |

| | | I used to open water endurance swimming. I lost motivation for that after it felt like Hulk Hogan was slamming my arms with a million daggers everytime I swam. |

| | | I don't know why they call it a 5K. It's a locally sponsored race this July 19. I believe the guy who made is a SEAL operator, so perhaps in their mind it's only 5k. It in VA Beach, and I've been trying to locate some people to come with me. Not so much as group time, but more safe in the water. |

| | | Say do you think I'll need a wetsuit? I've been meaning to buy one. Like how will it help besides keeping me warm? Like will I have extra buoyancy? Don't feel like spending 100 dollars for something that might not do me any good.
I'm planning to get a full face mask to cover my nose and eyes. Thus far, I only have the normal goggles. |

Thus far, I only have the normal goggles. | You won't need a wetsuit for warmth in the Virginia in July and a wetsuit will probably not be legal if this is a USAT sanctioned event. The USAT is the main sanctioning body for aquathlons, which is what this is and they won't allow wetsuits for any participants if the water temp is over 84F. You can wear a wetsuit if the water temp is between 78F and 84F but are ineligible for prizes.
As for buoyancy, I sink like a stone in fresh water and vowed to never do a tri in fresh water that was not wetsuit legal as I struggle mightily to keep from drowning, much less making progress. However, when I wear my 5mm triathlon wetsuit, I stay horizontal and expend no energy staying afloat. Salt water would make you more buoyant than in freshwater but not as buoyant as with a wetsuit in fresh water.
As for a face mask, I use an Aqua Sphere mask which covers my eyes. Flyin free mocks me, but I prefer it to goggles. |

| | | Okay, I asked the dude who manages the race. They will have SEAL boats out in the water and the lifeguards will be on duty. You can stand up in the water. So I don't think I'll need a wetsuit. Only problem is that everyone looks ripped in the pictures... I don't think I'll blend in well. lol.
How should I practice? I do a freestyle at the pool. I heard sidestroke is the way to go, but I don't think I'm doing it right.
I'm pretty excited though. | | | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Rate This Thread | Linear Mode | |
