I don't have a ton of money available for supplements, for I am in college, so I was curious as to the cheapest source of whey protein I could get. I used to use the cheap whey protein form Wal Mart (Body Fortress), I figured it probably wasn't much different than the $30-40 whey protein they try to sell you at GMC. Is there anything better than this on the cheaper side?
Yeah, the ON is cheap. Typically the MetRX protein that's basically the same as ON is a bit cheaper. At the store we were selling it for $15.99 for 2lbs. The chocolate tastes the same as ON and breaks down just as well.
I use American Sports Nutrition American Whey. 110 Calories, 0 Fat, 30mg cholesterol, 1% sodium, 6 grams total carbs, 20 grams of protien, and 25 miligrams of digestive enzyme blend. A little pricey at $28 for a 3 lb tub, but the taste is great. Better than any whey I've ever tried.
Funny. Body Fortress is a well respected brand and is sold at GNC, Vitamin World and other places in addition to Wal-Mart. I bet the folks who think its junk didnt know that their favorite supplement store also carries the stuff. Its great, probably the best tasting of any of the protein sups out there.
Oh yeah, if you arent lifting for competition, then this stuff will be just as good for you as ANY out there guarenteed.
What is important to consider is the amino acid profile of the whey supplement you're using. Optimum nutrition has an amino acid profile that is very high in glutamine, This gives ON an advantage over other cheap protein supplements. If youre looking for cheap ON supplements Amazon.com has pretty good prices on ON protein supplements.
Here's a good article dealing with protein supplements....

Who's favorite supp store is GNC (or Vitamin World for that matter)?
Every place that sells supplements sells a pretty wide variety of brands and products. That doesn't really lend any credibility to any of them in particular. Sort of like if you go into the average GNC and ask what's "good" for whatever goal, the clerk will show you what "has been selling a lot". Gotta love knowledgeable store employees.
