Protein Shake for diabeties

helloo.

Im 17 and have type 1 diabeties. Im looking at a protein shake. Ive just started college and ive just got my time table. I have 2 hours wednesday afternoon to work out and 1 hour tuesday/thursday. Monday I have no time and friday is a day off so I wont be at college for the gym. Im going to get my own dumbells due to a 3 day weekend with no gym Im looking for a protein shake which will hopefully help me along and I can drink one once a day between a lesson or something like this.

What would you recomend for a 16 stone 17 year old lad to gain muscle. I do have some fat so I wont want the weight gainer one.

Thanks/

I'm a Type 1 diabetic, and I drank lots of protein shakes when I was your age. I know that most people say "watch your protein intake if you're diabetic", but the fact of the matter is, if you're working out with weights, you need the extra protein. So if your kidneys are good, as far as I'm concerned, you don't have much to worry about. Just don't overdo.

Here's what I use: 100% Casein Protein - $44.99 : Optimum Nutrition, The Bigger Picture 0g carbs) and 100% Natural Whey Gold Standard - $35.99 : Optimum Nutrition, The Bigger Picture (5g carbs).

I'm not taking in any protein shakes right now, but if I was, I would drink the casein shake before bedtime. I would drink the whey protein shake in the morning and have another one after my workout. Then I'd have a meal about an hour later. I think you get the greatest benefit out of the whey shake when you eat a meal 30-60 minutes afterwards. Whey is absorbed by the body faster than casein, so I like to take both. Casein also regulates the release of amino acids into the bloodstream (it makes it more stable), so I really think whey and casein complement each other.

THIS IS IMPORTANT! If you are working out, your insulin sensitivity will increase, so chances are you will have to cut back on the insulin. And keep a handle on your BG levels before, during and after your workouts so you get an idea as to how high your BG should be before your workout so you don't bonk. Keep some gummy bears, jellybeans, or whatever you like, on hand in the gym so you can get some carbs if you start to feel a little hypo. I know a strength athlete who is also a Type 1 diabetic who drinks grape juice during his workout to keep his BG levels up.

You still might want to check with your endocrinologist and/or dietician before doing this, but my experience has been that doctors tend to steer diabetics away from heavy, anaerobic exercise and high endurance activities simply because of the challenges in keeping own BG levels stable (they take the low road -- I like to take the high road!). But if you know your body and you're willing to be your own guinea pig (which we are everyday anyway), I say "GO FOR IT!"

If you need a little inspiration, just look at Doug Burns. He's a Type 1 diabetic and won Mr. Universe. Here's an article you might be interested in: Scrawny Boy With Type 1 Diabetes Becomes Mr. Universe - Diabetes Health

Please keep us posted on your progress. And if you have any diabetic questions, just ask. There are a few people on the forum who are Type 1 diabetics and I'm sure they'd be happy to answer your questions

Wellness international makes a protein shake that I gave to my grandpa (who is also diabetic). He developed sores on his leg and needed a protein supplement that was both gentle on his body and low in carbs/sugar. Their protein shakes (ProXtreme) have 1 gram of sugar and 3 grams or less of carbs.

They are ideal for a diabetic.

On a side topic, my dad takes a product called LipoTrim. It is technically a weight management supplement, but it also helps maintain his blood glucose levels. He is a type 2 diabetic turned type 1. For a while he wasn't taking any insulin injections because of diet and he believes lipotrim. Since you're young and it college still, the diet part might not be as possible or interesting (the recipes came from a book called reversing diabetes). But the Lipotrim/ProXtreme might be worth checking out.

We order ours through a site called winyourhealthnow.com. There is currently a coupon that was e-mailed to us with our order a couple months ago that is still active. If you do order, use code FIRSTWAVE for a small discount.

Might be worth checking out.
