    Protein Supplement makes me sick!

I have just started lifting weights after a long break. I am in pretty good shape (Male 5ft 11in 175 lbs) and do a fair amount of cardio. I know the importance of a protein supplement before and after my lifting sessions, but the one I am taking makes me sick and ruins my workouts. I have the GNC brand whey protein. I mix it with a bottle of water and drink it starting about 30 minutes before I start lifting. I get really bad heartburn and sick to my stomach. I always do a cardio session after lifting to keep the heart rate up and metabolism primed, but have thrown up during my cardio after taking my protein. I have tried eating something like a banana or carrots to fill my stomach with something other than the protein, but it doesn't seem to help. A few years ago I took Myoplex for a few months and didn't have any problems. I spoke to my doctor about this during a physical and she said it is the introduction of so much protein into my stomach. She says the body releases a lot of acid when so much protein is introduced causing the upset stomach. I am putting this up for discussion. Any suggestions?

Don't drink it so close to your training. Drink it 2 hours before, let your stomach deal with the protein first. If it keeps making you sick try a different one and you will see whether it was that brand's fault or not.

I just posted information on the supplement reviews about the protein I take. Its called ProXtreme and has 25 grams of protein. Low sugar (1 gram) and low carbs (between 2-3 grams depending on flavor). I take it and couldn't be happier. Everyone I know loves it. It isn't 100% whey, its a mix of different protein sources, which might be easier on your stomach because your body will process it differently.

It might be worth looking into. GNC brand works for a lot of people, but I don't really care for it.

I get it from winyourhealthnow.com. Its a site that sells products from Wellness International. I've also been using a coupon code of FIRSTWAVE for a couple months now and so far its been working everytime. It gets 2% off the total order.

The GNC-brand stuff is terrible, try something different. My usual protein shake is Muscle Milk, and I went to GNC one day to pick some up and the guy at the counter suggested I try the GNC stuff instead. "It mixes better, tastes better, and is easier to digest!" he said. So I figured I'd try it. I got the strawberry flavor which, forgive this horrible description, tastes like vomit and Pepto Bismol. How in the world that's easier to digest is beyond me, I couldn't drink more than 2 sips of it before becoming nauseous. There's plenty of better ones out there, you might check the supplement recommendation thread on the forum for some more ideas.

I'd also try moving away from a whey based protein. Some people have trouble with dairy and even a small amount of lactose from whey protein can cause issues. GNC carries a rice based protein as well as an egg based one. From my experience, the egg based ones have almost a custard taste and are much better then the rice protein.

    Hope that helps!

agreed, and have something WITH your protein. protein isn't a meal by itself...pair it with a carb or a fat. pre-workout, you want a carb that doesn't have too high a glycemic index. oatmeal, a bit o brown rice with some veggies...would work.

remember too that working out taxes the central nervous system...and if u push it too far the body will do bad stuff like make you dizzy or vomit...to get you to stop 'abusing' it.

So I'd be curious to see what happens if you ditch cardio after lifting weights...move cardio to the days you don't weight training...3 days weights, 3 days cardio, and 1 day of rest (or un-focused exercise...i.e. participating in a sport for fun like flag football or shooting hoops)

Try slowing down the absorption by adding 1 tablespoon of Flax Oil to the shake. This will reduce the amount of stomach acid too.

I was gonna say the same thing. Same goes if the Casein protein is in the supplement. When I first started taking pure casein my stomach always got upset. After I started mixing it was less frequent.

Really?! Flax seed oil can do this... I'm having issues with stomach acid at nights. Any more info on this?

are you lactose intolerant or in other words cant digest milk products well. I have suffered from the same thing for years, until switching to a non milk based protein...
