Whey Protein

In my efforts to gain weight, I have been looking for an easy way to get extra protein. I'm tired of eating turkey and eggs day in and day out. I have a bunch of soy protein powder, but the texture and flavor make me gag when I try to eat it. I was doing some research and found that whey protein seems to be the most efficient, but I'm not sure what to buy. I went to the local vitamin and supplement shop and I was shocked at the prices of some of these protein powders. Some were so expensive that they were kept in a locked glass case to prevent theft. There were about 50 different types and some had other supplements mixed in with them. Where do I find plain, inexpensive but effective whey protein? I didn't realize something as simple as protein could be so confusing.

I get my protein through one of the trainers at my gym. It costs $30 for 2 + pounds - it says 15 servings but I use it as a supplement not a meal replacement so I use one scoop to add to things instead of two - so that is about 30 servings a jar.

I've had a bunch of kinds, but right now I have Myogenix Myolean Evolution - it comes in vanilla, chocolate and raspberry berry (maybe more, but those are what I've tried)- all are quite delicious.

I don't know how this compares to what you were thinking of paying but that is what just about everything I've used costs.

That sounds reasonable. The stuff I saw was like $80 for some pathetic little jar.

Here are the better tasting proteins in my opinion that don't cost an arm and a leg and taste good-

MRM's Whey Pumped
Optimum Nutrition's Black Label Whey
Biotest's Grow
Biochem's Greens and Whey
BSN's Syntha 6
Iron Tek's Micell Edge
Prolab's Lean Mass Complex (packets)
MetRX's Ultramyosyn Whey

Now, the Lean Mass Complex (from Prolab) is one of the best tasting of that group. However, it'll run you about $50 for a month supply. But the cinnamon oatmeal flavor is to die for.

The Syntha 6 from BSN is with the Lean Mass Complex in terms of taste. I'd rank it higher because it's not quite as thick so it doesn't require as much water. The strawberry literally tastes like a strawberry milkshake. It's literally the best tasting protein. EVER. (Micell Edge by Iron Tek comes very close). The Syntha 6 will run you about $30 for a month.

If you want to go cheap, get the MetRX brand. It looks like this Bodybuilding.com - Met-Rx 100% Ultramyosyn Whey - Fast Acting! On sale now!

It tastes good, is extremely cheap, and doesn't mix too badly.

Find a health food center that has a sports nutrition area. Price compare and see fi teh store stores will go down on price if their competitor is cheaper. Orrrr you can just order online.

p.s. True Protein | High Quality Nutrition and Protein Supplements is awesome. You can customize your own protein blends, they're very reasonable in price, and they have tons of satisfied customers. YOu might check them out.

I don't know how true this is but I heard from my health store here in Canada that the price for protein supplement powder is going up in the next couple of months in the states - marking us up too. Anybody ever hear of this?

Nope...the black label is the gold standard. You can call it either.

The price of corn is going up. When the price of corn goes up, everything goes up. I'm not quite sure the relation between whey and corn, but that's how it goes so it seems.

Corn feeds the cows. Pay more to feed the cows, we pay more for the milk. Corn is being used more and more for biodiesel fuels and less for farmers. This has been a huge scare as of late but I havent noticed any higher prices.

SP~ If you're just looking for a protein boost I would consider a blend. The True Protein site Evo posted is a good one, however you have to know how to blend it. I recommend At Large Nutrition - Your number one choice for nutritional supplements. Nitrean. It is a mix of whey, casein, and egg albumen. $42 for 76 servings, or 1x a day for 2 1/2 months.

Actually, corn is increasingly being converted to ethanol as a fuel supplement in gasoline, a trend that, unfortunately (IMHO), will continue.

But, what about Muscle Milk? The Mocha flavor rocks.

they moved my thread. Oh well.

Thanks for all of the advice. I'll check some of that stuff out. The most important thing is that I can get it locally, and that it has a good price. I can handle something that tastes bad, just as long as it doesn't taste as bad as soy protein. I'm not looking for any culinary masterpieces, just something that I can swallow without gagging.
