Cardio is very important in losing body fat. You just can't just do it on weight training alone. Yes weight training can help you but only up to a certain point it can make you stronger only if you do your strength training with proper form. Plus your diet is also key. There are other kinds of cardio that you can do. Walking and power walking is one. Bike riding and swimming is another. Do you like dancing? That's another type of cardio that you can do. What kind of shoes are you wearing is important when you exercise. Do you belong to a gym? To lose fat you got to get your heart rate up depending on your age and current weight and the intensity of your excercises matter because after a good intense workout your body will continue to burn more calories and your metabolism will go up resulting in losing body fat. I hope this helps.
It sounds like you have shin splints..pretty common, and the right stretching can help. Plus as you lose weight they will be taking less impact.
Cardio is pretty important to burning existing stored fat, so go for some low impact options like biking, swimming, elliptical machines, stairmaster, as well as a good, long, brisk walk (4mph).
From what I've read, and personal experiences, I believe weight training is a great fat burner. Even at rest, muscle has a high metabolic rate. So the higher the % of muscle you have the higher your metabolic rate. If you work out an hour every day, you're not working out for the other 23 hours, so a higher metabolic rate is very important in keeping fat at bay, as your body needs more cals to sustain itself.
Weight training is also a good calorie burner itself. If you don't rest much between exercises and sets, and use large muscle groups. Try tri-sets, i.e. tri's bi's and an ab exercise in one set. Rest for 2 mons, and do that again.
Of course ideally you would have cardio as well, but seeing as you can't at the moment, try and keep your heart rate going during your weights sessions.
Bodybuilders spring to mind. under 8% body fat, and I don't think they do much cardio and eat around 5000 cals per day... (Correct me if I'm wrong!!)
