Elliptical vs. Treadmill

I'm currently working out on the elliptical for an hour 4 times a week ... this burns 700 calories. I know i need to add some weigh training, etc but i havent gotten that far yet, I've only been working out for 2.5 months so far. Would i get more out of doing the elliptical for 1hr at 700 calories ... or doing the elliptical for 45 minutes and then the treadmill for 25 minutes for the same 700 calories burned? I'm a 24 yr old female trying to burn fat!

the more different kinds of exercise you do, the less your body can adapt to one specific type, which means you keep burning calories at a better rate.
I'd change it up all the time...elliptical, treadmill, cycling, and stairmaster. If you're going to a gym, look into some of the classes they offer, especially if they're free.

No official gym with free classes I work out here at my office ... we just have free weights, treadmills, ellipticals, and bikes ... so more or less just keep mixing it up and I'll burn more calories that way right?

I heard that running builds muscle and is cardio while elliptical is just cardio ... is that correct?

The number of calories shown on the ellipticals are way off(i.e. higher than what is actually burned).
Its best to switch machines.

Well then how much does 1 hr at resistence 4 burn? Should it be the same as an treadmill? We have noticed that the elliptical burns almost twice what the treadmill does ... Mostly, I am wanting to know HOW FAR off the calories burned are on the elliptical machine??

well it partially depends on your body weight, age, height, and how intense your are doing your cardio. Also its not only about how much you burn during your work out, doing intense cardio will raise your metabolism so your body is constantly burning more calories after working out.

Its best to use variety we get bored easily. Use every machine at your disposal, walk, hike, bike, anything.

An elliptical machine is a great cardio workout and if you work out on your like I do on mine, 700 calories for an hours is pretty accurate. The elliptical tends to let you work a little harder than a traditional treadmill, because you are not adding impact to your body and the Resistance can more directly work your muscles. However, I agree that you need to mix it up. Adding other cardio to your workout will maximize your benefits. You would definetly benefit from adding weight training to your routine as well. The more muscle you build, the more fat you will burn! Good Luck!

Do yall think that doing 2 days HITT on the treadmill or bike and then 3 days of 1hr elliptical would make a big difference in fat burned?? (vs. 1hr elliptical 5 days) ... or would it be better to do 45min elliptical and 20 treadmill (fast walk w/ some jogging) 5 days? Yes I agree Fitmonkey i need to add weightraining .. i just havent done it yet!! We just have free weights at my office gym so i've always been scared i'd use the wrong form and hurt myself ... thats probably as much an excuse as it is reality ... I added bike riding around my neighborhood .. who knew it was so difficult, it was WAY easier as a kid ... and the seat Really hurts! hahaha! Good thing i'm female or i bet i wouldnt be able to walk!

Don't fear the free weights; that's all I use. I workout at home, so free weights is all I have access to. If you are worried about form you could pick up a good weight training book, or try one of these web sites http://www.exrx.net/Exercise.html
http://www.uwlax.edu/strengthcenter/...ideo_index.htm

Three days of elliptical is fine; that's what I do. However, unless you are already fairly fit, you should take it easy with the HIIT; it can sometimes cause more injuries than benefits. Start out slow with short sessions and listen to your body.

Treadmill, cycling, walking, swimming, or a kickboxing class or video; It's all good!
