if i run early in the mornin like 6am before even eating anything, can i still lift weights that same day to build muscle mass? i heard if u run before eating anything first thing in the morning, ur body goes straight into the fat reserves for energy since theres no carbohydrates in ur blood. so technically i should be able to run and gain muscle on the same day because since im running BEFORE breakfast, im not robbing my muscles of any calories or potential mass right?

Yes, fasted cardio may increase Lipid use as fuel. That is, compared to if a person ate a high carb meal prior.
But, thats beside the point in this situation.
Technically, your always "burning fat". As you type your burning fat over that of carbs (in terms of a percentage line).
So with this in mind. You could type now and go do weights later. You have "burned fat" and possibly "gained muscle" (following recovery period). Fat is always active in the metoblic systems.
Now, if intensity begins to increase in this situation. The body will begin need carbohydrates for the more "intense" oriented metabolic pathways. In this situation. Amino acids use as an energy substrate greatly increases(mainly through conversion processes). This of course is not optimal for those seeking hypertrophy.
If one did do morning fasted cardio. It should remain vary relaxed and not creep up high on the intensity rating.
Also, there is always some level of carbohydrates in the body and blood at one time. If you want to get technical, of course.
Fasted cardio is actually a surprisingly debated topic. |

| | | The jury is out on debate on running in the morning (or cardio in the morning after one wakes up). You have to remember the circumference of food that you ate the day before is stored in various organs in the body (various nutrients---and carbs converted to sugar, ie, liver, etc), therefore there is some debate on whether this occurs or not. (along with intensity and duration of cardio, factors)
I wouldnt be overly concerned with it.......just do it, and watch your calories.

| | | If you run and burn 500 cals in the morning on an empty stomach, most of them being fat and you have a calorie intake of 3000 that day, you now have 2500. If you need 3000 to maintain, you now have a 500 cal deflict.
If you eat 3000 the next day, have a run after breakfast and burn 500 cals, from alot of carbs from the meal, but some fat too. You will be at 2500 at the end of the day. You now have a 500 cal deflict.
Both cases have a deflict, how you got it doesn't matter.
Take the first example again, but lets say you eat 4000. that's 3500 (because you burned 500cals of mostly fat) you have a 500 cal surplus.
the second example again, the same thing, you have a 500 cal surplus.
Get where I'm going with this? If you burn the cals from carbs or fat doesn't matter that much aslong as you create a deflict. |
