Just a quick question on my plan

I'm 17, about 5'10", and i weigh about 160 lbs. I have hardly any muscle, and I have some fat around my stomach and thighs that I would like to lose. I'm also looking to gain some muscle because i'm kind of interested in taking an MMA class. So I'm starting this new plan, but I really know nothing at all about fitness so i'm not sure how good it is.

I get up at about 6:30 and have a bowl of cereal (Usually Special K or something close to it) and 1 banana. After i'm done, I take an Equate Weight Conscious multivitamin. When I get home from school, at about 3:30 I usually have another banana and a granola bar thing (SlimFast or South Beach Living, depending on whats in my house). Finally, I have a salad (just lettuce, carrots, and spinach with some low-fat dressing) 5 days a week. The other 2 I have whatever my parents make for supper.

My plan to get into shape is to use my exercise bike 30 min. a day everyday, and weight lift (bench press and curls) for about 30 min. a day 4 days a week. I don't really have money to spend on fancy equipment or food, so i'm trying to work with what I have. It's getting really cold outside now so I can't go running outside, and my equipment for weightlifting isn't too great.

I just want to get some opinions from people and see if I'll be able to lose the fat I want and gain some muscle.

its always smarter to devote your time to either gaining muscle or losing fat because its impossible to do both except with beginner gains. But Even if you hav some fat but almost no muscle I would say try and gain muscle first. I had a similar problem and it seems like when you gain muscle and then try to cut your able to shed off more fat each time you go to cut.

You dont need fancy equipment, especially at your age. Do you have enough weights to do a proper routine??? If so start doing a proven routine and you will start gaining strength and muscle fast. If not, check out the bodyweight section of the forum cuz you can still get a good workout by doing bodyweight exercises (push ups, pull ups, bodyweight squats, crunches etc).

Read these they will answer most of your questions:

Good luck.

I think gaining muscle is better because you need some energy beside losing some weight. But if your priority is weight loss, drink more water and sleep more
