Lose weight, add muscle?

I used to be in roughly decent shape when I played football back in hs -- two good knees ago -- and since then, I have let myself slip. I am now pretty well overweight and am determined to get at least back into the shape I was in HS, if not better. Back then I used to just eat decent and lift/run a lot to keep myself in shape (used to take Creatine to help). Now I'm looking at adding a bit to it.

What I want to accomplish -- lose weight, and add muscle. I've considered 2 different ways of going at it -- focus on losing the weight first and then trying to focus on getting my muscle, or the second, just trying to go straight to converting my fat into muscle.

I'm looking for some tips because, as I said, I never really had a regimen before. Which of those 2 options would be best? Are there any regimens you would suggest? (I basically know what I'm doing for the lifting and running I guess, I'm talking moreso as far as dieting goes.) And are there any good supplements that you would recommend, as I'm not sure which to try as it all is a bit overwhelming at first with so many products out.

Thanks!

Well first off fat doesn't turn into muscle, they are two separate things.

What are your stats. Height, weight, age, normal daily diet.

You can lose fat and gain muscle simultaneously; and that's actually best because as you're losing fat, you're losing muscle as well. But weight training will help in retaining and building muscle.

It's all just consuming a clean diet, lifting hard and heavy, while also incorporating cardio a few days a week into your regimen.

As far as supplements, I'd personally stay away from them. For the most part, they're just a waste of money. It's best to take them only when a physician or registered dietician recommends it...you can already get everything you need through foods alone.
