Firstly, the vast majority of people don't have the strength of will to not eat for long periods of time. I have a lot of experience with this, as I go on lengthy fasts once or twice a year. Anorexics don't either, they're COMPELLED to by their obsession with looking like this vague image they have in their head. There's a difference. The only way you're going to be able to sustain a starvation diet is if you're mentally ill or driven by some higher purpose (some people would say there isn't much difference between the two
).
Secondly, and more importantly, the problem with starvation diets is not that you won't lose weight. It's that you lose other things, like muscle, your health and your sanity. If you somehow manage to keep all those, your only problems will be permanent damage to many of your senses, especially vision, your immune system, and many other important bodily functions.
Lastly, starvation diets are severely affected by the principle of diminishing returns. The more you starve yourself, the more resistant your body becomes to losing any weight whatsoever..and when you start eating again, if you don't just die, you will experience rapid weight gain that will most likely cause you to simply go back to not eating...until you die.
If you want to live your life looking like an undead version of chewbaca and have people pity you and judge you when you eventually die, starvation diets are great. If you want to lose weight and become more fit, diet and exercise would probably be better.
