Question Sushi Q

I've been having a sushi roll (aprox twelve 1" pieces) for dinner to mix up my routine and also add some protein. I usually get snowcrab, avocado and celery with rice and seaweed wrap. I know the soy sauce is probably too high in sodium (I get the low sodium), but overall, how healthy is sushi? Thanks.

sushi can be very healthy, my wife and i eat it quite a bit ourselves. the roll you mentioned in fact is a good one - low in calories & nutritious. the key is going light on the soy sauce (as you mentioned) and of course, portion control.

I love sushi and sashimi, and actually I like it without the rice and associated vegetables... What shimmering posted actually made me look in the Food Explorer with Fitday, and I was pretty surprised at what I found for their description of "Sushi, with vegetables, rolled in seaweed"...

Eating twelve pieces actually comes out to over 350 calories and 80+ grams of carbs. (Not really that low in calories, all things considered.) I couldn't find what just fish would rate, but I certainly hope that it would be a lot less than that.

Of course, 12 pieces of sushi are certainly better than 12 Chicken McNuggets any day!

that's still not high in calories for a dinner by any means, and it's all good for you besides a bit of sodium. sashimi is also very good for you, all protein pretty much. and the seaweed salads are very nutritious as well. just like pizza, sushi can be very nutritious - it's when you get people eating 5 servings of it in one sitting and using a lot of soy sauce that it becomes not so healthy.

as to where we get ours, usually in atlanta (2 hours from here). i used to work in a high end sushi bar so i have a pretty good understanding the better stuff, though even the cheap stuff is usually pretty tasty.

I go to the Party Source, a mega liquor store. they have a deli and have quite a sushi selection. Mine is prepackaged--the staff is gone by the time I get there for dinner. Thanks again guys!
