weight loss help for 14 year old

I need some advice on how to lose weight relatively quick. Im not asking for a way to lose it all in a week, but i dont believe that i necessarily have to wait a year or more to achieve my goals in a healthy manner. I am 5' 10'' and weight 170 pounds. I've been told that i dont look like i weight that much, and that i may have more muscle mass than fat, but i dont see the same when the shirt comes off. I have a flabby surface and i am looking for a way to lose weight and gain muscle. I own a weight bench and a weight set including dumbbells and a barbell. I've tried to diet in the past, sometimes successfully, losing 10 pounds in a couple weeks, but i quickly gained it back when my parents prepared foods that tasted good but weren't the healthiest choices. I try to eat healthy but there aren't very many healthy alternatives in my home, in fact ive spent a few minutes just looking around my entire house from fridge to pantry and couldnt find anything but a couple cans of vegatables and an apple or two. What i am asking for is a way to lose weight even under these circumstances, often what happens is i may have a successful morning but eventually succumb to the cravings of having a great tasting bowl of chips. Or in other cases i will try to have a small meal but i still want to eat more after i have finished. most of the time i feel very bored, and i can never think of anything fun to do. the only real exercise i may get in a day is some basketball outside for about an hour, but then i may come in and want to eat something, even without the hunger. i have read about people who eat because of boredom, and i may be one of them, but i dont know how to deal with it. I need some assistance in my journey to the world of the thin and healthy, i appreciate any help anyone out their is able to give. thanks

Heya,

Firstly, have you tried talking to your parents? I've been in a similar situation - my Mum just feels that a day without me stuffing my face full with chocolates and cakes is a day wasted. Took me a while, but I eventually managed to convince her that I seriously need to lose weight and that her tendency to cook all those delicious things wasn't helping. See if you can explain to your parents that you're interested in losing weight and that their nutrition plan is making it harder for you to do so.

Secondly, you said that you're bored most of the time. May I suggest finding yourself something to do? The more time you spend sitting bored and not doing anything, the greater the chance that you will want to grab a quick snack here and there. You need to find something to absorb your attention - playing computer games, exericising in a gym, reading bookis.

Thirdly, you mentioned that after eating a small meal, you always want to eat more. One trick that I discovered that really helps is eating slower! That's right - if you actually take your time to work your way through the mean, you will soon feel that you're stuffed full, even if the meal wasn't particularly big. Also, drink water - from my experience, I don't really get that many food cravings when my stomach is full of water. Finally, if you absolutely have to have a snack, see if you can have an apple or an orange or some other fruit - tell your parents that you have suddenly developed a passion for fruits if you have to!

Good luck,
George

Unless you run for miles aday you won't lose much weight without a decent diet. If we could eat like that and be fit everyone would be fit.

I have a feeling thee are several things at work.

First is your environment. It will be tough to put decent nutrition in your house without education and cooperation (ie...you have to know what to get, and your family has to go along with it). If they are filling the house with junk...chances are they are unfit and overweight as well. At your age, because they are in charge of the food, this is a challenge.

Second.....you need to take some responsibility for what you can do....and that would be exercise! You need to find some activities that you like to do......and start doing them.

At 5'10" and 170 and 14(you may be flabby, but that weight doesn't sound too bad)...there is a good chance that you are still growing. Maintaining weight is probably more practical as you continue to grow.

You should be working with a professional to help with your nutrition and exercise to get you on the right track. There are far too many kids today that are overweight and you should be commended for wanting to do something about it.

“Ideal weight” for a 5' 10" male is 149 - 183 lbs and slightly less for a female.

You do not have to be overweight to take right choices regarding your diet and exercise.

Start eating right and doing frequent exercises. Don’t wait to get overweight.
