Smile Basic questions--type of weights to start with?

I've read that it's best to combine weight training with cardio for weight loss and fitness, so I'd like to start weight training at home. Someone suggested dumbbells, but others seem to think that freeweights are better. Which are better to start with? And here's a really basic question: There are many, many listings on Craigs list for "olympic weight sets and benches"--are these considered "free weights" or is that a different category? Our goals are pretty standard--lose fat, increase our general level of fitness, and build muscle. Any advice appreciated! Thanks!

Free weights are typically used to describe barbells and dumbbells (as opposed to machines). A Craig's List description of an Olympic Weight Set is probably going to vary, but likely consists of a bench, a barbell and some plates, without dumbbells. You'll want a good variety of dumbbells and a barbell . Look around, sets that include both are sold regularly and benches can be found in the same sets or separately.
