The only time I use gloves is for pullups and lat pulldowns, because those two bars at my gym are like really spikey or something. For deadlifts, the gloves didn't workout I couldn't lift as much. But straps would probably be good for deadlifts, and puts a little more stress on the wrists without because when you have straps it's distributed a little better and you don't have to squeeze your forearms as much to keep a firm grip on the weight.

I will use straps when I go real heavy on shoulder shrugs, lat pull downs and deadlifts. I try to avoid using them when I can so I don't become dependent. As for gloves, I never use them because my hands are broken in enough that they don't hurt anymore. It just takes time to develop some calluses just like a guitar player is sore when he first starts to play. Unless your a girl I say no gloves. BE A MAN!

All bare hands...chalk sometimes (DLs, towel pull-ups, etc).

But that's just me, and everything is relative, so figure out what works for you.
