Curls Question, or multiple questions

just a few thing I'd like to work out.

Atm i am doing 6 sets of 12 reps with 6kg dumbells. (bar inc) with 60 sec break between each set. At the end of the 6 sets my arms are not all that tired. I have read that you should feel burn and ache at the end of a weight session because your body repairs and builds up the sore muscles (could be wrong here)

My question is should i do curls (if thats what they are called) until it burns? and if so increase the reps or weight of the dumbells. (Going for musclar endurance as im a surfer, with a bit of bulk though )

And i do this just about everyday..... should i be doing it everyday?

I am fairly new to body building, but I'm keen to learn alot

Cheers guys

Hi man...

First thing curling all the time will get you nowhere You most likely wont see any change at all in your biceps or very little.

Biceps are prob one of the least important muscle to be doing isolation exercises on, you want to be working the whole body. Is it just curling you do?.....

If so id say your wasting your time, you need a routine which works your whole body and a decent diet for you to see any changes in your body and performance.

Cheers Tom

We also have a home gym that basically does your whole upper body. I am gonna figure out some kind of routine on that too do aswell.

The dumbells is what i do everyday when i got time to waste, i go do some curls. I do a fair bit of riding and at the end of summer im gonna start running again too.

And im pretty much a vegetarian, i eat chicken maybe once every 2 weeks but that is about it.

But i guess my next step is working out a full routine right?

Yea work out a full, proper routine.

What exactly is your goal? are you wanting to increase in muscle mass?

Many people will be able to help point you in the right direction on here...Also have you tried reading the stickys in this part of the forum, they have lots of useful information

My aim is to last longer out in the surf without getting tired arms. But i also want to add a bit tone to my body.

Ill take a look at the stickys and print a few off, and when i get home from work tomorrow ill start working on a routine to get into.

Thanks Tom

Are your mucles tired? If they're not feeling tired try upping the weight. Six sets of 12 reps may be a bit exessive...
But keep positive because I have found that biceps grow very quickly.

so you're working biceps so you can paddle better with your arms?

if so, you're doing the wrong muscles. you need to be focusing more on your back and shoulders and chest. biceps are only responsible for pulling your forearm towards the bicep.

also, working everyday like this, you're never giving the biceps time to repair. i also would guess your form isn't good and you're cheating, since six sets of 12 reps with strict for should leave a serious pump and some fatigue. then again you never recover so you're not even able to work at your maximum force due to the hypertrophy that's not allowed to fully heal.

If I were you, I'd take 4-5 days off, then come back and start doing heavy compound exercises. bench press, shoulder press, bent over rows, pull-ups/lat pulldowns. when you work your back, your biceps get worked too, in many cases to the point where you hardly need to do isolation for them.

Nobody including surfers should be doing bicep curls only. I'm an advocate of the full body workout and compound exercises.

For what it's worth....

" What Do You Need To Be A Better Surfer ?

- For one, you need explosive leg strength. You need to be able to go from lying down to jumping to your feet on a moving board in the blink of an eye.

- Two, you need core strength (back and abs) for stability while you are on the board.

- Three, you need muscular endurance for stamina to get you through a hard day of surfing. By focusing on these three components, you can personalize strength training to your goals and reap the rewards.

that article isn't half bad in terms of gearing a routine strictly for surfing needs.

but I'd say unless your goal is to be a pro-surfer, you should train the whole body in a variety of ways, because life requires a variety of physical skills, not just paddling and standing up on the board.

Damn this article has helped me alot. Knowing where i have gone wrong and what i need to do better.

I guess ill take what i have learn't from this article research it further more and see if i can work something out. Main thanks to Malkore, on the 5 days I take off ill do some more "learning".

and to powerhouse, I didn't really need to hear that. I am happy with where i am at the moment. I just plan on adding a little more to what I've got and from what I have read I have been set on the right track.

Thank you all
